Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to complete basic repair and maintenance of production equipment and facilities used in the screen, media and entertainment industries.
It applies to individuals who work under the supervision of a technical director or senior production staff, using some discretion, judgment and relevant theoretical knowledge to carry out their responsibilities.
Testing and tagging of electrical equipment must be carried out by a person with the relevant certificate of competency in accordance with the performance specifications of:
Australian Standard 3760: 200 In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment
Australian Standard 3002: 1985 Electrical installations – shows and carnivals.
In some states and territories:
only licensed electricians can undertake the tasks outlined in Element 2
a restricted electrical licence is required to repair and maintain production equipment. Restricted electrical licences allow a person to carry out electrical work incidental to a trade. Incidental work may include fault-finding on equipment or changing like-for-like equipment by disconnecting and reconnecting the fixed wiring. It does not include any other changes to the fixed wiring.
Check with the relevant regulator for specific guidance on requirements.

1. Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
safely undertake routine maintenance and repairs on production equipment efficiently, using manufacturer’s service and technical manuals if required
select and use cleaning, maintenance and repair equipment correctly
undertake logical fault detection procedures
tag faulty equipment and document maintenance and repairs.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
describe licensing issues that impact repair and maintenance of equipment, including the role of the restricted electrical licence, and testing and tagging certification
describe effects of not maintaining production equipment
list typical maintenance schedules for a range of relevant production equipment
list appropriate cleaning agents, maintenance and repair equipment
list common faults and associated detection and repair procedures for the relevant range of equipment
identify sources for spare parts and consumables for the relevant range of production equipment
identify work health and safety legislation and regulations as they apply to technical maintenance activities.
Assessment Conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:
a range of operational industry equipment and materials
manufacturers’ equipment manuals
a venue where repair and maintenance can be completed
tools and equipment required to complete repair and maintenance tasks.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
