Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to set down music in a notated form, by hand or using computer based music notation applications.

It applies to individuals including emerging composers, arrangers, conductors, performers, musicians, music producers, music editors and publishers.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Select notated music for analysis

1.1 Identify a primary music style for analysis, and choose repertoire for analysis

1.2 Investigate the uses of notated music forms in performance, composition or music production

1.3 Explore music technology applications that are suitable tools for notating music

2. Deconstruct music conventions

2.1 Explore notation norms for rhythmic, melodic and harmonic structures

2.2 Examine conventions of form and music structures

2.3 Investigate the symbols used to indicate dynamics and expression marks

2.4 Investigate music writing conventions

3. Notate music cells

3.1 Identify notation requirements through discussion with appropriate people

3.2 Notate music in required format

3.3 Adhere to music writing conventions

3.4 Complete all work within agreed timeframes

4. Review effectiveness of music writing

4.1 Seek feedback on skill development from appropriate people

4.2 Identify personal strengths and weaknesses as a means of improving own work

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

use conventions of music notation to notate music cells

integrate feedback from others and combine with own observations to determine next steps for skill development.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.


Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline musical protocols and customs for notating music relevant to chosen music specialisation

describe musical forms and conventions in written notation for selected genres and styles

describe conventions for notating music fundamentals.


Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

a selection of notated and recorded music

software and hardware for setting down music

manuscript, pencils and erasers.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
