Perform solo in a musical theatre context


Application

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to rehearse and perform as a solo performer in a musical theatre production.

While supervision and guidance are provided in practice sessions and rehearsals, performers are expected to display a high level of motivation and responsibility for themselves and others when it comes to applying their acting, dancing and singing skills in a live performance context.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare for rehearsals

1.1 Ensure a complete understanding of rehearsal requirements

1.2 Demonstrate physical preparedness for rehearsals

1.3 Clarify aspects of own part and solo requirements in performances as required

1.4 Refine own performance techniques for rehearsals in association with other performers as required

2. Participate in rehearsals

2.1 Perform physical and vocal warm-up and warm-down procedures in line with performance requirements

2.2 Establish effective work relationships with members of the rehearsal team to advance performance outcomes

2.3 Practise improving solo and group routines in line with performance expectations

2.4 Adapt aspects of individual performance as directed

2.5 Pace energy during rehearsals to maintain focus and consistency of performance

2.6 Collaborate in performances to achieve the overall desired outcomes

2.7 Observe protocols and behaviour expected at rehearsals

3. Perform solo elements of role

3.1 Use techniques for overcoming performance anxiety to ensure effective performance

3.2 Use voice, movement and space effectively in solo performances to communicate meaning and enhance characterisation

3.3 Speak, sing and move with confidence and a sense of spontaneity to demonstrate command of the role

3.4 Sustain complex characterisation through musicality, dance and voice phrasing, and correct timing as choreographed

3.5 Perform in a style appropriate to the context of performances

3.6 Respond flexibly and effectively to contingencies as required to maintain integrity of performances

3.7 Take staging, special effects and health and safety issues into account when performing role

3.8 Interact considerately and constructively with stage management and other artistic, venue, studio and organisational staff as required

4. Evaluate performances

4.1 Review performance in association with other performers and identify factors for future improvement

4.2 Contribute to assessment of audience response to performance

4.3 Measure own performance against previous work to assess technical and artistic development

4.4 Respond to analyses of own performance and adjust as required

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

perform solo before an audience in at least one musical theatre production

integrate singing, dancing, acting, voice and movement skills in the role performed

follow safe movement and vocal practices during rehearsals and performances

demonstrate progression of performance skills over the rehearsal period

improve own performance in response to constructive feedback

contribute to evaluations of performances

respond appropriately to performance context and contingencies that arise

work collaboratively with production team members and other performers.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.


Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

explain principles underlying dance movements and techniques in a musical theatre performance context

explain principles underlying vocal techniques in a musical theatre performance context

demonstrate techniques for integrating dance, movement, acting and singing in performances

explain stage layout and directions

demonstrate an understanding of musical elements

explain the following health and safety issues:

hearing protection

protection of body against injury from overuse

healthy diet and nutrition

safe lifting procedures

strategies to overcome performance anxiety

discuss issues and challenges that arise when rehearsing and performing

follow performance and rehearsal protocols

explain the relationship between rehearsals and performances.


Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to rehearsal and performance venues and spaces with suitable flooring and equipment.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
