CUFCAM501A
Shoot material for screen productions under special conditions

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to operate cameras under special conditions for film or television productions. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

Application

Shooting material under special conditions is undertaken by experienced camera operators. They could be working on productions that require capturing shots from moving vehicles, aircraft, trains or underwater using digital or film cameras.

Shoots may involve risk situations requiring the application of safe work practices and close collaboration with production team members.

Generally speaking, a director of photography or director supervises such shoots but there are circumstances where camera operators may carry responsibility for most if not all of the filming, e.g. deep underwater shoots.

This unit builds on the skills acquired in:

CUFCAM401A Shoot a wide range of television content

CUFCAM402A Shoot television content in a multi-camera environment.

Evidence Required

The Evidence Guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required skills and knowledge, range statement and the Assessment Guidelines for the Training Package.

Overview of assessment

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Evidence of the following is essential:

ability to make creative contributions to the planning and execution of filming under a range of special conditions

strong teamwork ethic and ability to work under direction and to deadlines

ability to operate cameras and ancillary equipment in a multi-camera environment and under special conditions

knowledge and application of photographic principles

application of safe work practices when filming under special conditions.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure:

practical demonstration of skills through filming sequences under a range of special conditions

access to a range of professional equipment currently used in the film and television industry

opportunities to work on single-camera and multi-camera shoots that require filming under special conditions

access to appropriate learning and assessment support when required

use of culturally appropriate processes and techniques appropriate to the language and literacy capacity of learners and the work being performed.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third-party workplace reports of on-the-job performance

observation of the candidate filming under special conditions to assess candidate's ability to capture shots safely

evaluation of sequences filmed by the candidate to determine candidate's ability to meet creative production requirements

written or verbal questioning to test knowledge as listed in the required skills and knowledge section of this unit.

Guidance information for assessment

Holistic assessment with other units relevant to the industry sector, workplace and job role is recommended, for example:
