Restore moving images

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to restore moving images that have originated from film and video material.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

Application

The skills and knowledge described in this unit apply to operators involved predominantly in the restoration of moving image material transferred to digital, digital intermediate workflows and video-based material.

Generally, these operators work in production houses specialising in film to digital transfers, film archive organisations, or motion picture film laboratories.

In most circumstances, operators at this level work under the supervision of a senior operator.

Clarify work requirements

1. With reference to documentation, identify the type and format of image data received, the level of restoration required, and the required output format

2. In consultation with relevant personnel, identify deadlines for production of completed restoration and ensure work is planned to meet production requirements

Power on and calibrate equipment

3. Power on equipment according to manufacturer specifications and enterprise procedures

4. Log in to the system and activate restoration equipment

5. Calibrate equipment, e.g. monitor for colour consistency and render nodes for access times

6. Undertake regular equipment checks according to enterprise procedures

Operate restoration system

7. Transfer image data from received external media to restoration equipment

8. Import image data onto restoration equipment

9. Apply restoration tools to image data depending on the level of restoration required and the parameters of the tools

10. Assess the resultant image against the original for quality and artefacts, according to the level of restoration required

11. Export image data in the required format according to intended use

Complete work operations

12. Send sample image data to client for comment, respond appropriately to feedback and receive final go-ahead

13. Complete documentation and assign metadata as required

14. Archive image data onto appropriate media according to enterprise procedures

15. Transfer completed image data from restoration equipment to external media

16. Transfer or deliver final image data to client

17. Review restoration process and note areas for future improvement
