Observe and monitor hostile areas to detect targets

This unit covers the competency required to observe and/or listen for targets remote from the target acquisition assets and to provide information to stakeholders.This work will be undertaken as part of a team and under supervision, however it will also require the authority to act independently.This observation is normally conducted by at least two people; one person will be the observer and one will record the data. This Unit of Competency covers both roles. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. In a Defence context, this means that there is no civilian need to hold this unit in order to meet licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements.

Application

This competency was developed for combat arms personnel required to observe and/or listen for targets remote from the target acquisition assets and to provide information to stakeholders in a deployed operational environment but is applicable to any individual in this field of work.

Typically, operators work pairs under direct and/or indirect supervision, use discretion and judgement, and take responsibility for the quality of their outputs. All activities are carried out in accordance with relevant organisational policies and procedures.

ELEMENT	PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
1. Occupy and prepare a location	1.1 An appropriate vantage point is occupied and concealment is maintained throughout the operation. 1.2 Occupied position is established. 1.3 Reference points are established and information is documented. 1.4 Possible threats are observed and monitored so an appropriate plan of action can be prepared.
2. Detect target/s	2.1 Target position is established via aural and visual observation, and bearing and distance are estimated 2.2 Threat (if present) is identified and classified through visual or aural recognition, or by crater analysis. 2.3 Enemy capability is estimated. 2.4 Hostile action is monitored from prepared position. 2.5 Communications with stakeholders is maintained so that relevant information can be provided.
3. Provide information on target to stakeholders	3.1 Target is described to stakeholders. 3.2 Records are maintained in accordance with standardprocedures.

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated over time and across a range of simulated or actual workplace situations in at least two different target locations from at least one observation site.
