DEFCA102B
Operate and maintain armoured fighting vehicle weapon systems

This unit covers the competency required to operate armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) direct fire weapon systems to effectively produce fire.Direct fire weapon systems are integral to and operated in conjunction with, the AFV. People who undertake this work will be part of an AFV crew.Direct fire is primarily used during conventional operations to establish fire supremacy in order to destroy the enemy's will to operate. It can also be applied in accordance with the Rules of Engagement during operations other than conventional war such as security and peace support.

Application

The application of this unit in the workplace - the environments, complexities and situations involved - will be written during Phase II of the Review of the PUA00 Public Safety Training Package.

This text will be useful for the purposes of job descriptions, recruitment advice or job analysis; where possible, it will not be too job specific to allow other industries to import it into other Training Packages, where feasible.

Evidence Required

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Assessment must confirm the ability to apply effective fire in all conditions through the application of fire discipline in a live fire environment; to react instinctively to fire orders; to work as an effective member of the crew; and to operate the system without a breach of safety procedures.

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated over a range of operations or in simulated operational environments.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed in an operational or simulated operational environment. The simulation should replicate the live environment where stress and fatigue are key features. The individual must be assessed as part of a crew.

Specific resources for assessment

Access to a simulated or actual operational environment, an armoured vehicle, its crew, weapons, equipment and ammunition.
