DEFCA211B
Supervise the destruction of hostile air targets using GBAD systems

This unit covers the competency required to supervise and control all aspects of the operation of a direct fire ground based missile system designed to destroy hostile aircraft. The control of the ground based missile system requires target interrogation, analysis, engagement and decision-making based on tactical information, situational awareness and observed target activity. While this work will be undertaken under the commander's direction the individual must be able to act independently as required by the circumstances. This unit of competency is written for visual range ground based air defence weapon systems, which does not include small arms.

Application

The application of this unit in the workplace - the environments, complexities and situations involved - will be written during Phase II of the Review of the PUA00 Public Safety Training Package.

This text will be useful for the purposes of job descriptions, recruitment advice or job analysis; where possible, it will not be too job specific to allow other industries to import it into other Training Packages, where feasible.

Evidence Required

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Assessment must confirm the ability to recognise own level of authority; to correctly identify a number of different types of aerial targets as determined by the Combat Arms Training Centre; to prioritise targets in a high intensity situation encountered in a threat environment; to direct fire in a clear and concise manner, and to take appropriate action in the event of misfire and cancel missile in-flight; and to supervise the deployment and maintenance of ground based air defence systems.

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated over a period of time in a range of different environments that could be expected in the workplace.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed in a simulated operational environment due to the high cost of ammunition. The simulation should replicate the live environment where stress and fatigue are key features.

Specific resources for assessment

Access to a hi-fidelity simulator that accurately simulates the threat environment.
