Conduct range practices

This unit covers the competency required to conduct weapons range practice to support the maintenance of operational readiness in the Australian Defence Force (ADF).Range practice may include the following types of ranges:Standard 25 metre range25 metre and 100 metre open rangesClassification rangeStatic mechanical rangeMTRField firing ranges including small arms, high explosive, anti armour and indirect fire weaponsWTSSThis competency encompasses the safe and efficient planning and conducting of range practices as the OfficerinCharge (OIC). Conducting, in this instance, also includes effective supervision of safety, and the preparation and finalisation of range practice using weapons and ammunition for which the OIC is qualified to operate. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. In a Defence context, this means that there is no civilian need to hold this unit in order to meet licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements.

Application

This competency was developed for Defence personnel required to perform the duties of OIC for the conduct of range practices within a Defence working environment.

Typically, OIC work independently under indirect supervision, use discretion and judgement, and take responsibility for the quality of their outputs. All activities are carried out safely in accordance with relevant organisational policies and procedures.

1. Prepare for range practices	1.1 Relevant range regulations are identified and applied in accordance with standard procedures. 1.2 Work health and safety (WHS) requirements and recognised safety precautions including those contained in ADF procedures, are applied throughout the task. 1.3 Relevant control measures are identified employed. 1.4 Administrative requirements are completed. 1.5 Safety trace is constructed when required, in accordance with standard procedures.
2. Conduct a range practice	2.1 Safety is effectively supervised and maintained. 2.2 Safety trace data is identified and applied. 2.3 Duties of the OIC are efficiently performed in order to comply with relevant regulations and safety requirements. 2.4 Range practice is safely conducted in accordance with current publications and the relevant range instruction.
3. Finalise range practices	3.1 Ranges are refurbished in accordance with standard procedures. 3.2 Post range practice administration is completed in accordance with standard procedures.

Safety is effectively supervised:	from firing points and butts, effects bunkers, moving and static firing points relative to the target area, for relevant weapons and ammunition types by: adhering to weapon and ammunition handling drills adhering to orders and instructions conducting inspections and clearances maintaining situational awareness
Safety trace data may include:	elevation firing line limitations firing point limitation left and right of arc locations of effects bunkers locations of observation posts target triangulation weapons and ammunition types
Duties of an OIC may include:	construction, set-up and layout of the range and range practice development and implementation of a range instruction
Refurbishing a range may include:	cleaning up firing points cleaning up, repairing or replacing targetry and target areas destroying and/or reporting unexploded ordnance removing and accounting for range stores, produce and ammunition
Post range practice administration may include:	complete range clearance conducting clearances and inspections debriefing firers, users and staff raising of relevant range, training and trade documentation submitting reports, returns and evaluations
