This unit covers the competency required to conduct weapons range practices to support the maintenance of operational readiness in the Australian Defence Force (ADF).This competency encompasses the safe and efficient planning and conduct of basic range practices as the Officer in Charge (OIC). Conduct in this instance also includes effectively supervising safety, preparing and finalising range practices using weapons and ammunition for which the OIC is qualified to operate.Range practices may include:25 metre and 100 metre open rangesclassification rangemobile training rangestandard 25 metre rangestatic mechanical rangeweapons training simulation systemNo licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. Application

This competency was developed for Defence personnel required to perform the duties of OIC for the conduct of basic range practices within a Defence working environment.

Typically, OIC work independently under indirect supervision, use discretion and judgement, and take responsibility for the quality of their outputs. All activities are carried out safely in accordance with relevant organisational policies and procedures.

Prepare for range practices	1.1 Relevant range regulations are identified and applied in accordance with standard procedures. 1.2 Occupational health and safetyWork health and safety (OH&SWHS) requirements and recognised safety precautions are applied throughout the task. 1.3 Relevant control measures are identified and employed. 1.4 Administrative requirements are completed.
2. Supervise safety on a range	2.1 Safety is effectively supervised for relevant weapons and ammunition types. 2.2 Safety data is identified and applied. 2.3 Incidents are managed in accordance with instructions from supervisor and range instructions.
3. Conduct a range practice	3.1 Relevant regulations and safety requirements are complied with. 3.2 Range practice is safely conducted in accordance with current publications and the relevant range instruction.
4. Finalise a range practice	4.1 Ranges are refurbished in accordance with standard procedures. 4.2 Post range practice administration is completed in accordance with standard procedure.

Assessment must confirm the ability to perform the following on a live firing range:

conduct the appropriate range practice in a safe and competent manner

ensure participants adhere to all words of command, orders and instructions

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated in the conduct of a number of actual range practices in accordance with current regulations while performing the duties of a safety supervisor and the OIC practice.
