Treat risk within Defence at an operational level


Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to treat risk within Defence at an operational level.

It includes the skills required to identify, plan and implement treatment options in order to reduce risk.

This unit applies to Defence personnel required to treat risk but may be relevant to others working in this field. Those undertaking this unit would work both independently and as part of a team, while performing routine tasks to apply unknown solutions to a variety of unpredictable problems. They would normally have local supervisory or management responsibility and apply known solutions to a variety of predicable problems.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Make risk decision

Calculate the level of risk and compare it to the established risk evaluation criteria in consultation with the supervisor

Evidence of Performance

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and includes:

accessing and complying with relevant organisational plans, policies and procedures

defining and identifying risk language, definitions and terminology

evaluating a situation using the methodology and procedures approved by the organisation and clarifying information with supervisor

following instructions and reporting information

making notes of observations

presenting mathematical ideas in appropriate format

providing and receiving feedback in a constructive manner

treating risk using the methodology and procedures approved by the organisation

using problem solving skills for a defined range of problems


Evidence of Knowledge

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

effective communication strategies including:

written

oral

techniques for giving and receiving feedback in a constructive manner

relevant organisational policies and procedures

risk management terminology and language in accordance with relevant standards


Assessment Conditions

Assessors must hold credentials specified within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and all regulatory requirements included within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations. Where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that reflect workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or simulations

acceptable means of simulation assessment

applicable documentation, including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals

relevant materials, tools, equipment and PPE currently used in industry.

Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.
