DEFLS004B
Maintain and fit oxygen masks

This unit covers the competency required to maintain and fit oxygen masks. This unit of competency has been written for masks fitted to aviation aircrew and would normally include communication devices. However, there may be other applications. Integral to the fitting of the mask is the integration of the mask and the helmet to the person.Maintaining an oxygen mask includes inspecting, testing, isolating faults, replacing, cleaning and testing prior to placing the item back into service.Fitting an oxygen mask includes adjusting the mask to fit the individual because the item is not an off-the-shelf issue.

Application

The application of this unit in the workplace - the environments, complexities and situations involved - will be written during Phase II of the Review of the PUA00 Public Safety Training Package.

This text will be useful for the purposes of job descriptions, recruitment advice or job analysis; where possible, it will not be too job specific to allow other industries to import it into other Training Packages, where feasible.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

1. Maintain oxygen mask

1.1 Oxygen mask is inspected for serviceability in accordance with standard procedures

1.2 Oxygen mask is tested for serviceability in accordance with standard procedures and manufacturers' specifications

1.3 Identified faults beyond own authority to rectify are reported to supervisor and faulty oxygen mask quarantined

1.4 Unserviceable parts of the oxygen mask are replaced to render oxygen mask serviceable

1.5 Communication system components are tested in accordance with standard procedures

1.6 Oxygen mask is cleaned in accordance with standard procedures

1.7 Oxygen mask is presented for inspection by supervisor and work is not progressed until supervisor has completed inspections in accordance with standard procedures

1.8 Relevant documentation is completed in accordance with standard procedures

2. Fit oxygen mask

2.1 Fitting process is explained to the participant so that optimal fit can be achieved through relevant feedback

2.2 Participant is measured to select appropriate size oxygen mask

2.3 Components of oxygen mask are adjusted to optimise fit

2.4 Integration of the oxygen mask and helmet is confirmed for correct function during operations

2.5 Oxygen mask fit is verified through participant feedback and supervisor approval

2.6 Relevant documentation is completed in accordance with standard procedures
