Identify and monitor radiation hazards

This unit covers the competency required to effectively identify the sources of radiation, including noise, radio frequency, and ionising radiations, that may be a hazard in the workplace and to monitor the hazard and hazard controls that have been recommended and/or implemented. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. In a Defence context, this means that there is no civilian need to hold this unit in order to meet licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements.

Application

This unit was developed for Defence workers involved in identifying and monitoring radiation hazards as a workplace responsibility, but is applicable to all individuals who work in this field.

Typically, these individuals must demonstrate the ability to work independently or as part of a team under indirect supervision. They must be able to use discretion and judgement and take responsibility for the quality of their outputs.

1. Identify workplace radiation hazards

1.1 Source of radiation is identified in accordance with relevant organisational policy and procedures.

1.2 Existing organisational records relevant to the radiation are identified and accessed.

1.3 Occupational Work health and safety (OH&SWHS) requirements, including those contained in organisational procedures, are applied throughout the operation.

1.4 Appropriate consultation with stakeholders is conducted. in accordance with organisational policy and procedures

2. Monitor radiation abatement plans or controls

2.1 Workplace walkthroughs and observations are conducted. in accordance with organisational guidelines, legislation and local radiation abatement/control plans

2.2 Breaches of formal and informal protocols, plans and local controls are recorded and reported. in accordance with organisational policy, procedures, guidelines and legislation

2.3 Monitoring equipment, where installed, is regularly inspected. in accordance with organisational policy, procedures, guidelines and legislation

3. Maintain workplace radiation records/ documentation

3.1 Workplace radiation records are maintained in accordance with relevant organisational policy, procedures, guidelines, and relevant legislation

3.2 Equipment/instrument deployment and maintenance records/documentation are maintained in accordance with relevant manufacturer manuals/guidelines and/or organisational policy and procedures.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed in the workplace or under conditions that accurately simulate a realistic workplace in accordance with all relevant legislation and organisation requirements.

Evidence should be gathered while observing the individual conducting actual or simulated workplace identification and monitoring of workplace radiation hazards. A record of all relevant research, interviews and findings should also be submitted as evidence for assessment.
