Apply ionising radiation safety procedures

This unit covers the competency required to apply appropriate safety procedures or plans related to the control or mitigation of ionising radiation.In the context of this unit, ionsing radiation may include emissions from radioactive elements, controlled apparatus, sealed and unsealed sources.The unit includes researching, consulting and applying procedures within an organisation that have been specifically developed for the organisation. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication. In a Defence context, this means that there is no civilian need to hold this unit in order to meet licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements.

Application

This unit was developed for Defence workers involved in applying ionising radiation safety procedures as a workplace responsibility, but is applicable to all individuals who work in this field.

Typically, these individuals must demonstrate the ability to work independently or as part of a team under indirect supervision. They must be able to use discretion and judgement and take responsibility for the quality of their outputs.

All activities are carried out in accordance with relevant legislation, organisational policies and procedures.

1. Prepare for the application of workplace ionising radiation safety procedures/plans

1.1 Source of ionising radiation is identified in accordance with organisational policy and procedures.

1.2 Existing organisational records relevant to the radiation are identified and accessed.

1.3 Work health and safety (WHS) requirements are applied throughout the operation.

1.4 Appropriate consultation with stakeholders is conducted.

2. Apply ionising radiation safety procedures/plans

2.1 Appropriate ionising radiation protective measures are employed.

2.2 Relevant notices/signs are displayed or published.

2.3 Ionising radiation sources are handled in accordance with legislation, standards and/or organisational policy, procedures and guidelines.

3. Maintain workplace ionising radiation safety documentation

3.1 Workplace ionising radiation records are maintained.

3.2 Equipment/instrument deployment and maintenance records/documentation are maintained.

Consistency in performance

Competency should be demonstrated over a range environments and workplace ionising sources. This may be in the workplace or in a simulated workplace environment.

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed in the workplace or under conditions that accurately simulate a realistic workplace in accordance with all relevant legislation and organisation requirements.

Evidence should be gathered while observing the individual applying ionising radiation safety procedures in an actual or simulated workplace. A record of all relevant research, interviews and findings should also be submitted as evidence for assessment.

Access to relevant research material, manufacturers’ equipment specifications and existing related standards, policy and instructions.
