Application
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to prevent fires during normal work activities. It includes the use of fire extinguishing equipment and methods for detecting fire risks.
The unit applies to those working in a broad range of job roles across different work settings in a forestry environment: including saw mill, wood chip mill, veneer mill, board/plywood mill, timber treatment plant, forest products factory, and forest products sales and service, horticultural, domestic, local council and emergency services.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare for fire prevention | 1.1 Review work order for policies and procedures for fire prevention, and check wih appropriate personnel 1.2 Identify and report existing and potential fire risks and hazards to appropriate personnel 1.3 Select appropriate fire extinguishing equipment for fire prevention 1.4 Follow workplace procedures, work instructions and legislation for fire prevention 1.5 Establish and maintain communication with others according to WHS requirements |
2. Evidence of Performance
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.
identify problems and equipment faults that might lead to fires, and recognise signs of fires
select and use fire extinguishing equipment
follow site, legal and organisational requirements and protocols relevant to fire procedures in the workplace
locate, record and report information about fires.
Evidence of Knowledge
A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
legal and organisational requirements and codes of practice relevant to the full range of processes for fire prevention
environmental protection requirements, including the safe disposal of waste material
organisational and site policies and procedures for fire prevention
environmental risk assessment and hazard identification for:
flammable liquid and gases that might be used or found in the workplace
storage areas for flammable liquids or gases
mixing and blending vessels for flamable liquids or gases
types of tools and equipment, and their safe use, for fire prevention
procedures for recording and reporting workplace information
signs of fire
personal protective equipment and its fire protection properties
fire weather evaluation.
Assessment Conditions
The following resources must be made available:
fire extinguishers
policies and procedures for fire prevention
personal protective equipment.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.
Assessor requirements
Assessors must:
hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
