Maintain quality and product care

Application

The unit of competency describes the outcomes required to maintain and monitor the quality of one’s own personal output, as well as of the products being produced according to work health and safety (WHS) policies and procedures. The unit includes using timber technology to assess timber products in order to maintain their quality and care.

It applies to hardwood and softwood cell structured timber, native and imported species of timber, and in a variety of work settings, including a forest environment, a saw mill, wood chip mill, veneer mill, board/plywood mill, timber treatment plants, downstream processing of timber, forest products factory, forest products sales and service, horticultural, domestic, local council and emergency services environment.

This unit is relevant for a broad range of job roles across a range of industry sectors.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare to maintain quality output.

1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Identify quality system procedures to be applied to own work.

1.3 Visually inspect products before processing in line with WHS policies and procedures.

1.4 product specification requirements.

2. Use technology to assess timber.

2.1 Classify species and timber structure and confirm with appropriate personnel as required.

2.2 Locate timber features and compare them with product specification requirements.

2.3 Evaluate timber characteristics and record drying or treatment requirements as required by the enterprise.

2.4 Assess visual appearance of timber and report in line with workplace procedures and organisational requirements.

3. Monitor and control product care.

3.1 Monitor product recovery to optimise resource value and minimise waste.

3.2 Check potential of materials to provide the highest value add return with appropriate personnel.

3.3 Regularly maintain and adjust machinery and equipment to minimise waste and damage.

3.4 Identify problems as they occur and promptly report them to appropriate personnel to avoid producing de-valued product.

3.5 Record and report on quality and product care procedures in line with workplace procedures.
