Application
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to identify, sort and rack hardwood or softwood material in a forest products factory settings. The unit includes verification of material to ensure appropriate quality and separation of material with faults.
The unit applies to Kiln Worker, Treatment Plant Worker, Sawmill Worker, Production Worker , Manufacturing Assistant (Timber Products) ,Timber Manufacturing Worker, Timber Products Worker, Timber Puller.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
ELEMENTS | PERFORMANCE CRITERIA |
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions. |
1. Prepare to rack material | 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel. 1.2 Identify type and quantity of material to be racked. 1.3 Select appropriate personal protective and other equipment and check for operational effectiveness. 1.4 Plan racking processes in line with work order. |
2. Identify material | 2.1 Follow organisational safety procedures throughout all racking processes. 2.2 Identify requirements for standard diameter ranges of round poles by visual estimate or use of a measuring tool. 2.3 Identify requirements for standard cross sections of sawn or dressed boards by visual estimate or use of a measuring tool. 2.4 Identify requirements for standard lengths of material by visual estimate or use of a measuring tool 2.5 Identify and interpret stress grade labels, colour identification marks and other tags |
3. Rack material | 3.1 Check bearers for consistent thickness and damage and dispose of substandard ones. 3.2 Place bearers and spacing sticks squarely, evenly and consistently. 3.3 Rack material in line with work order and organisational safety procedures. 3.4 Rack material of consistent type, cross section, length or diameter. 3.5 Identify, separate and dispose of faulty material in line with environmental protection practices. 3.6 Clear work area regularly to maintain a safe and efficient workflow. 3.7 Record and report processes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel. |
Evidence of Performance
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.
follow organisational policies and procedures relevant to racking material
safely prepare, sort and rack material to industry standards
identify, separate and safely dispose of material with faults.
Evidence of Knowledge
A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
environmental protection practices for disposing of, recycling and reusing timber and other waste
range of industry standard diameters, lengths, cross sections, tolerances, stress grades and applicable terminology
methods of visual estimation, grading, colour identification and tagging
purpose, features and operation of equipment used to rack materials
requirements for quality and dimensions of bearers
organisational procedures specific to racking material:
workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on use of personal protective equipment
communication reporting lines
recording and reporting processes and equipment faults.
Assessment Conditions
The following resources must be made available:
tools and equipment used to rack materials
personal protective equipment (PPE) suitable for racking material
commercial quantities of timber materials to be racked
work order with specific instructions for racking material
template documents for recording processes and equipment faults
organisational procedures for racking material.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.
Assessor requirements
Assessors must:
hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
Foundation Skills
This section describes those core and employment skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria. | |
Numeracy skills to: | identify diameters, cross sections and lengths of materials by visual estimation or using a measuring tape or gauge. complete basic calculations for spacing of bearers. |
Oral communication skills to: | ask open and closed probe questions and actively listen to clarify contents of work orders. |
Reading skills to: | interpret detailed familiar and unfamiliar: workplace health and safety and other organisational procedures work orders. |
Writing skills to: | complete accurate basic records for processes and equipment faults. |
Planning and organising skills to: | efficiently and logically sequence the stages of preparation and racking work using work order to guide activities. |
