Band edges of panels

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to set up, operate and maintain edge banding machines that use automated processes to apply and finish edge treatments.

The unit applies to timber products operators that apply edge banding to timber panels in a wood products factory setting

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENTS

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for edge banding

1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Identify type and quantity of panels to be edge banded and obtain panels.

1.3 Select appropriate equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.

1.4 Select edge banding process in line with work order.

2. Set up edge banding equipment

2.1 Follow lock out procedures, set machine to suit material to be edged and adjust as required.

2.2 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions environmental protection practices.

2.3 Conduct test runs to check machine operation, accuracy and quality of finished work and make adjustments to machine settings.

2.4 Use suitable tested materials for processing or reject and dispose of in line with environmental protection practices.

3. Apply edging

3.1 Feed panels into machine in line with manufacturer's instructions and safety procedures.

3.2 Monitor machine operations to ensure product quality and output.

3.3 Minimise waste by checking trim distances for cut off on each panel.

3.4 Repair sub-standard panels, dispose of or recycle in line with environmental protection practices.

3.5 Identify routine processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel.

3.6 Complete production and quality records and report in line with organisational procedures.

4. Complete operator maintenance

4.1 Follow organisational safety procedures to lock out equipment.

4.2 Check edging mechanisms for bluntness and build-up of glue and rectify.

4.3 Check and reload edge treatments in line with manufacturer recommendations.

4.4 Clear dust and debris from machine area.

4.5 Record and report equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

apply edging to one or more timber panels in line with individual work orders using one or more materials from the following list:

laminated veneer

chipboard

fiberboard

medium density fiberboard

select the appropriate machine settings for:

panel size

squareness

profile

edge treatment width

alignment of the edge treatment

speed of the application

trim allowances

glue application rates (if not glue-backed).

Evidence of Knowledge

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for forest products factory settings:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing timber

key features of panel products and purpose of edging

edge banding techniques:

checking the trim distances for cut off on each panel

appropriate machine settings for:

panel size

squareness

profile

edge treatment width

alignment of the edge treatment

speed of the application

trim allowances

glue application rates (if not glue-backed)

types of tools and equipment used for banding edges of panels; their purpose, features, operation and basic non-specialist repair and maintenance:

automated edge banding machines

mechanical edge banding machines

glue-backed veneer edge strip role

timber edging strips

laminate edge stripping (glue-backed or glued, on a role or in strips)

methods for assessing condition of edging mechanisms

organisational procedures specific to banding edges of panels:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out

use and maintenance of equipment

communication reporting lines.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

tools and equipment used to band edges of panels including:

automated edge banding machines

mechanical edge banding machines

glue-backed veneer edge strip role

timber edging strips

laminate edge stripping (glue-backed or glued, on a role or in strips)

maintenance tools and equipment for edging mechanisms

personal protective equipment suitable for banding edges of panels

a diverse, comprehensive and commercial product range of panels

manufacturers’:

instructions for equipment use

recommendations for cleaning, repairing and maintaining

work order with specific instructions for banding the edges of panels

template documents for recording production outcomes and equipment faults

organisational procedures for banding edges of panels.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

Foundation Skills

This section describes those core and employment skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Numeracy skills to:

identify quantities of required material within work orders and count raw materials

read basic numerical machine settings and choose according to panel dimensions

complete basic calculations to determine trim distances for panels

complete routine production records involving dimensions and quantities tallied against orders.

Oral communication skills to:
