Apply wood and timber product knowledge


Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to apply wood and timber product knowledge in the workplace and promote the benefits of wood and timber products to a range of customers and other stakeholders. It involves identifying products and providing accurate information to customers and other stakeholders about those products.

The unit applies to Customer Service/Sales Assistant, Sales and Merchandising Team Leader, Timber Advisor.

1. Develop knowledge of wood and timber products.

1.1 Identify and evaluate information sources for wood and timber products for reliability, validity and currency in line with organisational policies and procedures.

1.2 Research wood and timber product certification bodies, schemes and their roles.

1.3 Identify properties of wood and timber.

1.4 Identify main features of timber products.

1.5 Analyse differences between imported versus Australian wood and timber products with relevant personnel.

1.6 Maintain currency of wood and timber product knowledge.

2. Relate wood and timber product knowledge to own workplace.

2.1 Prepare to work safely according to workplace work health and safety (WHS) requirements.

2.2 Identify and review workplace wood and timber production process.

2.3 Consult with supervisors and colleagues about current wood and timber product issues.

2.4 Analyse common wood and timber treatment methods, preservatives and exposure hazards.

2.5 Match timber coatings and finishes to a specific use.

3. Promote wood and timber products to stakeholders.

3.1 Promote characteristics of timber to stakeholders according to organisational procedures.

3.2 Respond to stakeholder enquiries about wood and timber products and their respective advantages according to organisational procedures.

3.3 Advise on appropriate timber(s) for specific end uses.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

identify, research and evaluate information relating to wood and timber products

follow organisational policies and procedures relevant to applying and communicating wood and timber product knowledge

provide advice on and promote wood and timber products to stakeholders.


Evidence of Knowledge

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

common timber species and their origin, appearance, properties and uses including

durability

density

sawing orientation

strength group

shrinkage

joint strength

lyctus susceptibility

fire rating

hardness

knowledge of products applicable to enterprise requirements

benefits of common wood and timber types for different end uses

suitable species and product types for wood and timber applications

life cycle of forests and forest products and how this impacts on sustainability

methods, preservatives and exposure hazards relating to manufactured timber: engineered products, laminated veneer lumber (LVL), medium density fibreboard (MDF), plywood, and particle board

manufacturer product literature covering features and benefits of wood and timber products

certification and chain of custody schemes and their purpose in the forestry industry

timber grades and their uses for client applications

procedures for matching timber coatings and finishes to specific end uses

wood preservatives and their safety data sheets:

action required to stay up-to-date with product knowledge

procedures for recording and reporting information provided to stakeholders.


Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

materials and equipment relevant to applying wood and timber product knowledge:

product information from manufacturers and industry stakeholders

relevant safety data sheets (SDS)

specifications and work instructions relevant to production of wood and timber products in own workplace

organisational policies and procedures relevant to applying wood and timber product knowledge

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
