Quote and interpret from manufactured timber product plans


Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to interpret plans and layouts and manually prepare quotations for standard roof and floor trusses and wall frames.

The unit applies to workers who plan and quote on timber and wood products in a facility that produces these products.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Interpret plans and loading conditions

1.1 Interpret and assess plans, drawing views and notes; identify loading information and design requirements and restrictions.

1.2 Obtain additional information and data from appropriate personnel and other sources.

1.3 Create functional and pictorial images of structure, simple trusses, frames or floors based on design requirements.

2. Complete manual quote for roof and floor trusses

2.1 Select roof truss types to meet order requirements and define structure using common industry spacing’s for trusses and components.

2.2 Determine layouts, spacing and sizing of individual structural members progressively, in line with order requirements.

2.3 Calculate and document quantities for bracing and roof truss ancillaries.

2.4 Select appropriate floor trusses from range of certified standard designs.

2.5 Prepare, check and record quotation for roof and floor trusses in line with organisational procedures.

3. Complete manual quote for wall frames

3.1 Measure and calculate wall frame lengths from plans and dimensions appropriate to timber sizes.

3.2 Prepare, check and record quotation for wall frames including costing per unit length in line with organisational procedures.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

complete quotations regarding the following types of manufactured timber products in line with an individual design and set of specifications for each for each job:

timber roof trusses

timber floor trusses

timber wall frames

prepare documentation advising on production and installation to accompany quotations.


Evidence of Knowledge

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

applicable building and structural regulations for timber wall frames, roof and floor trusses

common industry terminology for all components of timber wall frames, roof and floor trusses

common industry standard layouts, spacing and sizing dimensions of individual members for timber wall frames, roof and floor trusses

relationship between component loads and supports and spans

methods used to manually calculate, using tables and scientific calculators:

layout of roof trusses

truss, beam and frame materials and quantities

industry and specific organisational:

quotation processes for timber wall frames, roof and floor trusses

sources of costs for materials and labour to manufacture

formats for and inclusions of quotations

formats for and inclusions of production and installation advice documents

organisational procedures for preparing and documenting quotations for timber wall frames, roof and floor trusses.


Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

computers, keyboards and industry current software programs used to produce documents

scientific calculators

designs, plans, technical specifications and notes for timber wall frames, roof and floor trusses on which to base quotation

in-house material price lists, product description sheets or manuals; either electronic or hard copy

template documents for recording calculations and quotations

sample production and installation advice documents

organisational procedures for preparing and documenting quotations for timber wall frames, roof and floor trusses.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

interpret designs, plans and technical notes.

plan processing of quotations in a logical sequence and manage own timing and productivity to complete quotations within deadlines.
