Application
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to set up operate and maintain computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining and processing centres used for the production of panels and components. Work is completed in a forest products factory setting andincludes operator maintenance.
The skills and knowledge required for competent workplace performance are to be used within the scope of the person's job and authority.
The unit applies to Production Worker, Timber Fabricator, Engineered Timber Products Technician.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions. |
1. Prepare for machining | 1.1 Review work order and check with appropriate personnel. 1.2 Select appropriate personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness. 1.3 Obtain type and quantity of material for machining from storage location. 1.4 Plan material machining process in line with work order. |
2. Set up machine | 2.1 Set CNC program to job specifications. 2.2 Check cutting machines, cutting tools, jigs, emergency stops, gauges, guards and controls for safe and effective operation. 2.3 Adjust cutting machine settings in line with work order. 2.4 Complete trial run to check system and machine operation for accuracy, quality and dimensions of finished work. 2.5 Accept or reject trialled material and dispose of in line with environmental protection practices. 2.6 Complete final adjustments to CNC program and equipment. |
3. Operate machine | 3.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions , design capacity and purpose and environmental protection practices. 3.2 Feed materials into machine, operate cutting equipment in line with tooling requirements and monitor use regularly to minimise waste and ensure correct dimensions are produced. 3.3 Repair or dispose of incorrect cuts, off-cuts and material with defects in line with environmental protection practices. 3.4 Identify routine processing problems and resolve or report to appropriate personnel. |
4. Complete operator maintenance | 4.1 Follow organisational safety procedures to lock-out equipment. 4.2 Check cutting tools for bluntness or damage. 4.3 Remove and replace cutting tools in line with manufacturer recommendations. 4.4 Dispose of used cutting tools in line environmental protection practices. 4.5 Keep machining area clear of dust and debris in line with organisational safety procedures. 4.6 Record and report production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel. |
