Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to test heavy structural and engineered products in line with product quality specifications. The unit includes establishing specifications and test methods, conducting and interpreting tests, and reporting findings.

The unit applies to those working in a forest and wood products factory setting.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for testing

1.1 Review and check work order.

1.2 Obtain type and quantity of products to be tested are acquired from the storage location.

1.3 Select equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer instructions.

1.4 Follow workplace procedures to plan testing.

2. Implement procedures to test heavy structural and engineered products

2.1 Select heavy structural and engineered products for testing in line with

2.2 Conduct test in line with established test methods and quality assurance procedures.

2.3 Identify testing problems are identified and resolved or report these.

2.4 Obtain test results and compare data are made against product specifications.

3. Report outcomes of test

3.1 Identify potential or existing problems that might affect product quality and make recommendations for improvement.

3.2 Record and report outcomes of testing.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

follow organisational and quality procedures for testing heavy structural/engineered products

safely and efficiently collect data

accurately interpret test results

identify problems that may affect test results

complete accurate records and reports.

Evidence of Knowledge

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

different types of products that might require testing and methods suitable for conducting those tests

benchmarks or standards for products being tested

issues that might affect function or suitability of structural/engineered products

problems associated with the testing process: test accuracy; sample quality; faulty material; defects

testing methods for modulus of elasticity, surface hardness, modulus of rupture, sheer strength and compression strength

types of tools and equipment used for testing heavy structural/engineered products and maintenance [procedures for those tools and equipment]

criteria for recycling, re-using, repairing or disposing of faulty products

procedures for recording and reporting workplace information.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

heavy structural/engineered products for testing

equipment necessary for testing

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

documents, spreadsheets and commonly used proforma documents

personal protective equipment required for testing heavy structural/engineered products.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
