Application
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to coordinate log debarking operations in order to meet the requirements for quality output.
The unit applies to those who undertake log debarking in a forest products factory setting
No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
ELEMENTS | PERFORMANCE CRITERIA |
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions. |
1. Plan debarking operations | 1.1 Assess variations in timber characteristics and record outcomes of assessment. 1.2 Produce debarking schedules according to organisational procedures 1.3 Communicate schedules, log management procedures and order information to sawyers. 1.4 Plan and prescribe diameters and lengths. |
2. Monitor debarking process | 2.1 Review specified standard diameters and lengths. 2.2 Monitor debarking processes for accuracy of diameter and condition of debarked logs 2.3 Provide assistance to operators with the evaluation of logs and debarking problems 2.4 Monitor log management and output and record possible process improvements 2.5 Investigate, record and report on debarking operations, major problems and equipment faults. |
3. Direct debarking operations | 3.1 Make modifications to diameters or schedules to ensure optimum performance, and communicate these to operators 3.2 Document log debarking improvement modifications. 3.3 Obtain and record debarked log output details. 3.4 Direct debarked logs to storage or transferred for further processing. 3.5 Complete operating logs and processing records. |
Evidence of Performance
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.
follow organisational policies and procedures for log debarking
produce and implement debarking schedules
assess individual logs for diameter range, curvature, faults, species and moisture content
coordinate personnel to conduct log debarking to meet established quality specifications and timelines
identify faults in logs.
Evidence of Knowledge
A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
organisational policies and procedures for log debarking
log debarking procedures and management
standard diameters and lengths
log management information for diameter range, curvature, faults, species and moisture content
types of tools and equipment used for log debarking, and procedures for their safe use and maintenance.
Assessment Conditions
The following resources must be made available:
log debarking equipment
individual logs for debarking (species, faults, curvature and moisture content)
tools and equipment used for log debarking
templates for works orders and debarking schedules
personal protective equipment required for co-ordinating log debarking operations.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.
Assessor requirements
Assessors must:
hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
Foundation Skills
Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.
