1. Plan and prepare for chipping | 1.1 Review work order and clarify with appropriate personnel. 1.2 Identify and assess type and quantity of timber to be chipped to meet requirements for work order and safe working conditions. 1.3 Select equipment to meet to work requirements and check for operational effectiveness. 1.4 Plan chipping activities in line with site procedures and environmental and heritage concerns 1.5 Position and set-up chipper to ensure stability and to effectively chip wood 1.6 Communication with others is established and maintained in line with WHS requirements. |
2. Chip timber | 2.1 Carry out pre-operational checks on the heavy production mobile chipper. 2.2 Start up chipper according to safe workplace requirements 2.3 Detect site hazards associated with chipper and plan safe operating techniques to minimise risk. 2.4 Direct timber into the chipper at a rate applicable to the capacity of the machinery and chip size specified in the work order. 2.5 Direct chipped timber into the back of a truck or other modes of transportation or for stockpile. 2.6 Establish and maintain communication with truck driver to ensure efficient and safe loading of chipped materials |
3. Carry out machine operator maintenance | 3.1 Lock-out chipper and shut down if required, in line with site procedures. 3.2 Conduct visual inspection to identify issues and faults. 3.3 Remove and replace worn components as required to fulfil the work order. 3.4 Clean, check and carry out routine maintenance tasks on chipper. 3.5 Record and report chipper operations, faults and maintenance activities. |

assess timber to be chipped for defects that will affect processing
safely conduct start up and shut down of a heavy production mobile chipper in line with enterprise procedures
carry out routine maintenance on a heavy production mobile chipper
work safely and communicate effectively with others in the work area
follow organisational policies and procedures relevant to operating a mobile chipper
Evidence of Knowledge
A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
workplace policies and procedures for operating a heavy production mobile chipper
environmental protection requirements
operational procedures and checks including start-up and shut-down procedures
characteristics of trees and timber defects that can cause processing problems
chip types and quality
established communication channels and protocols to maintain safety
processes for managing risks and hazards associated with chipping wood
re-positioning and set up mobile chipper
workplace health and safety requirements, fire protocols and emergency evacuation procedures
procedures for recording and reporting workplace records and information.
Assessment Conditions
The following resources must be made available:
a heavy production mobile chipper
logs, trees and/or wood resource to be chipped
work order, workplace requirements and site standards for operating a heavy production mobile
truck, trailer or container for receiving chipped material
relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information
personal protective equipment required to operate chipper.
Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.
Assessor requirements
Assessors must:
hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and
be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and
be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
