Implement harvesting plans

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to implement forest or farm forest harvesting plans for established coupes to maximise output and cost efficiencies.

The unit applies to job roles including Harvesting Supervisor, Harvesting Team Leader, Forestry Supervisor, Forestry Operations Supervisor, Arboriculture Supervisor, Farm Forestry Supervisor, Propagation and Stand Health Supervisor and Tree Farm Supervisor.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit in some states & territories at the time of publication, and may differ according to jurisdiction.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Plan coupe harvesting

1.1 Access and interpret harvesting plan and check where required with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Calculate size of coupe and available timber.

1.3 Estimate equipment, human and other resource requirements.

1.4 Draw up personnel plans and schedules and notify coupe harvesting date and location to employees.

1.5 Organise availability of appropriate equipment and ensure operational effectiveness.

1.6 Apply for planning permits.

2. Implement harvesting plans

2.1 Analyse and record forest type, topography and available species in line with harvesting plan.

2.2 Calculate gross area of coupe and determine nett area to be harvested.

2.3 Calculate and record volume estimates.

2.4 Implement and monitor operational activities including access, site preparation and environmental and workplace health and safety protection measures.

2.5 Contract cartage operators via tender and set cartage routes.

2.6 Produce, check and communicate schedule for harvesting.

3. Review harvesting work plan

3.1 Identify and evaluate problems encountered during harvesting and use information to enhance future planning.

3.2 Review and evaluate personnel and equipment efficiencies and use information to enhance future planning.

3.3 Identify and document environmental issues encountered during harvesting and feed into future planning processes.

3.4 Record harvesting plan implementation issues and report to appropriate personnel

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.
