Application
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to prepare and assemble materials with nail plates; and to stack, strap and despatch them in readiness for transport to a construction site. Work is completed in a forest products factory setting.
The unit applies to Production Worker, Sawmill Worker, Manufacturing Assistant.

1. Prepare for assembly | 1.1 Review construction plans and work order and where required clarify with appropriate personnel. 1.2 Identify and obtain type and quantity of material and nail plates to be assembled. 1.3 Select appropriate tools and equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations. 1.4 Identify and prepare set-up jigs required for construction. |
2. Assemble materials | 2.1 Select timber components from pre-cut material in line with cutting list. 2.2 Reject material with defects and dispose of in line with environmental protection practices. 2.3 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions environmental protection practices. 2.4 Identify allowable number and position of joins from construction plan. 2.5 Position and clamp components in jigs ready for joining with allowable faults, joins and grain in line with construction standards and grading rules. 2.6 Staple components to maintain temporary alignment during assembly. |
3. Install nail plates | 3.1 Position material and nail plate press over joints. 3.2 Position nail plates on joints and install in line with construction plan. 3.3 Repair or dispose of substandard and damaged nail plates in line with environmental protection practices. 3.4 Correct assembly faults in line with organisational procedures 3.5 Identify routine processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel. |
4. Prepare material for despatch and report outcomes | 4.1 Check finished material for quality and label in line with work order. 4.2 Remove components from jigs and safely stack in designated location. 4.3 Strap, pack and label finished material ready for transportation. 4.4 Avoid wastage of strapping and packaging materials and maximise use of recycled materials. 4.5 Complete production and quality records and report in line with organisational procedures. |

Assessor requirements
Assessors must:
