Application
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to dismantle, transport and assemble a hand portable sawmill for the purposes of milling green boards at an on-site location. Work is completed in a forest products factory setting and off-site.
The unit applies to Production Worker, Saw Operator.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions. |
1. Prepare for operation | 1.1 Review and check work order where required with appropriate personnel. 1.2 Identify type and quantity of logs for sawing and check location. 1.3 Select appropriate repair, maintenance and personal protective equipment and check operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer’s recommendations. 1.4 Plan dismantling, transport and set-up processes to optimise recovery time. |
2. Dismantle, transport and assemble hand portable sawmill | 2.1 Follow organisational safety procedures thoughout all processes. 2.2 Follow sequence of activities to dismantle sawmill in line with manufacturer's instructions. 2.3 Load and secure dismantled sawmill equipment for transportation, and move to new location. 2.4 Inspect proposed new work site for potential hazards and work flow interferences. 2.5 Identify safe site for logs, stacking of sawn boards and waste. 2.6 Follow sequence of activities to assemble hand portable sawmill in line with manufacturer's instructions. 2.7 Complete pre start-up checks on equipment to ensure operational effectiveness. 2.8 Identify routine processing and equipment faults and resolve or report to appropriate personnel. |
3. Complete operator maintenance | 3.1 Follow organisational safety procedures to lock out equipment. 3.2 Check saw blades for bluntness or damage. 3.3 Remove and replace saw blades in line with manufacturer's recommendations. 3.4 Dispose of used blades in line with organisational procedures and environmental protection practices. 3.5 Complete basic non-specialist maintenance for equipment. 3.6 Record and report equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel. |
