1.1 Review orders, and requirements for wood chip movement.

1.2 Produce stockpile schedules according to site procedures.

1.3 Check wood chip supplies.

2. Control stockpile

2.1 Establish area for stockpile and estimate growth or contraction on basis of production and shipping schedules.

2.2 Review reach of chip slinging equipment.

2.3 Inspect stockpile and identify hazards within vehicle operational area.

3. Coordinate wood chip movement and loading

3.1 Select and allocate vehicles and attachments to spread chips and load transport.

3.2 Advise site of spreading, movement and loading operations.

3.3 Coordinate stockpile levelling in accordance with site procedures.

3.4 Coordinate and direct wood chip retrieval from the stockpile edges to transport.

3.5 Investigate, record and report on wood chip movement and equipment faults in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

plan, coordinate, communicate and schedule stockpile operations

safely use, and direct others to safely use, chip slinging equipment

maintain the stockpile so that it is stable, compact, and provides access for chip retrieval and for continued slinging

safely direct others when chips are being delivered and transported by wheeled or tracked dozers or loaders

maintain schedules so that sufficient quantities of chips are available to meet demands

maintain accurate records about the stockpile and the movement of woodchips and follow organisational procedures.

Evidence of Knowledge

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

purpose and safe use of equipment used in coordinating and monitoring the wood chip stockpile including:

wheeled dozers and loaders

chip slinging equipment

wood chip movement and loading procedures

environmental protection requirements for maintenance and safe disposal of waste material from stockpiles, and the cleaning of plant, tools and equipment

organisational and site policies and procedures relating to the wood chip stockpile

environmental risks and hazards associated with stockpiles, which must include risks arising from forms of contamination

wood chip movement and loading procedures

procedures for recording and reporting workplace information

maintenance procedures for tools and equipment.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

organisational policies and procedures relevant to coordinating and monitoring the wood chip stockpile

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

Foundation Skills

This section describes those core and employment skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Numeracy skills to:

calculate area and volume of wood chips

calculate reach of wood slinging equipment.

Oral communication skills to:

coordinate transport and direct movement of stockpile.

Problem solving skills to:

manage hazards and ensure movement of wood chips to meet established schedules.

Planning and organising skills to:

sequence activities for the movement of wood chips.
