Machine material

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to operate basic static machines used for sawing, planing, sanding and drilling and complete non-specialist maintenance. Work is completed in a forest and wood products factory setting.

The unit applies to job roles including saw operator, timber manufacturing worker, timber products worker, customer service/sales assistant (timber merchandising), woodmachinist.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for machining

1.1 Review work order and check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Obtain type and quantity of material to be machined from storage location.

1.3 Select appropriate equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.

1.4 Plan material machining process in line with work order.

2. Set up machines

2.1 Check safety equipment, including emergency stops, gauges, guards and controls.

2.2 Complete machine settings and adjustments in line with job requirements and manufacturer's instructions.

2.3 Complete trial runs to check machine operation, accuracy and quality of finished work.

2.4 Accept or reject trialled material and dispose of in line with environmental protection practices.

2.5 Adjust machine setting as necessary.

3. Operate machines

3.1 Complete equipment pre start-up checks in line with organisational procedures.

3.2 Operate machine in line with manufacturer's instructions, safe operating procedures and environmental protection practices.

3.3 Monitor machine operation to ensure product quality and output.

3.4 Repair sub-quality items to minimise waste and recycle or discard others in line with environmental protection practices.

3.5 Stack material safely in designated location in line with work order requirements.

4. Complete operator maintenance

4.1 Follow organisational safety procedures to lock-out equipment.

4.2 Remove and replace fixed cutter heads in line with organisational procedures.

4.3 Joint straight cutters in line with organisational procedures.

4.4 Record and report machining outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.
