Repair veneer mechanically

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to assess and patch single thickness veneer mechanically to an acceptable level for continued use.

The unit applies to production workers who repair veneer mechanically in a forest and wood products factory setting.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for repair

1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Select appropriate personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.

1.3 Obtain type and quantity of material to be repaired from the veneer production process.

1.4 Select patch strips in line with work order.

2. Patch veneer

2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.

2.2 Complete pre start-up equipment checks to ensure operational effectiveness.

2.3 Set equipment controls and coordinate veneer flow with other operators to ensure minimal downtime.

2.4 Inspect veneer defects, cut patch strips minimising wastage and feed into machine.

2.5 Position veneer sheets to accept patch, and process.

2.6 Position out-feed bins or trays to collect repaired veneer and clear regularly.

2.7 Patch manually where mechanical process is not possible.

3. Redistribute material

3.1 Grade patched veneer in line with organisational procedures and industry standards.

3.2 Direct material to storage or processing operations in line with organisational procedures.

3.3 Dispose of irreparable material and excess patch strips in line with environmental protection practices.

3.4 Clean work area and store unused patch strips in line with organisational safety procedures.

3.5 Record and report production outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

repair veneer mechanically in line with an individual work orders that prescribe repair requirements and quantities for each job

complete repairs for the following types of defects:

splits

splintered and missing edges

for each of the above jobs, visually inspect veneer and re-classify its quality and use after repair.

Evidence of Knowledge

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for repairing veneer mechanically:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing timber and excess patch strips

typical flow of material supply in and out of the repair area

features of typical defects in single thickness veneer:

splits

splintered and missing edges

typical work flow processes and repair techniques used to patch veneer to an acceptable level for continued use

purpose, features and operation of veneer patching machinery

key features of and applicable terminology for industry standard grades for re-classifying quality of repaired veneer

organisational procedures specific to repairing veneer mechanically:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out and use of personal protective equipment

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting production outcomes and equipment faults.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

veneer patching machinery with out-feed bins or trays

personal protective equipment suitable for repairing veneer mechanically

commercial single thickness veneer

consumable veneer patch strips lined with an adhesive heat reactive backing

manufacturers’ instructions for use of equipment

work order with specific instructions repairing veneer mechanically

template documents for recording production outcomes and equipment faults

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

organisational procedures for repairing veneer mechanically.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

Foundation Skills

This section describes those core and employment skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Numeracy skills to:

identify quantities of required material for repair within work orders and count amounts

complete basic calculations for quantity of patch strip to meet production requirements

measure and cut patch strips to appropriate length for areas to be repaired.

Oral communication skills to:

ask questions and actively listen to clarify contents of work orders.

Reading skills to:

interpret:

workplace health and safety and other organisational procedures

work orders

manufacturers’ instructions.

Writing skills to:

complete accurate basic records for production outcomes and equipment faults.

Planning and organising skills to:

efficiently and logically sequence the stages of preparation and repair work using work order to guide activities.
