Prepare veneer for ply

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to assemble multiple layers of veneer to form plywood panel.

The unit applies to production workers who prepare veneer for ply in a forest and wood products factory setting.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for assembly

1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Select appropriate personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.

1.3 Obtain type and quantity of material to be assembled from veneer production process.

1.4 Select production process in line with work order.

2. Bond veneers

2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.

2.2 Complete pre start-up equipment checks to ensure operational effectiveness.

2.3 Adjust spreader stations to provide material delivery in line with required board cross-section distribution.

2.4 Apply glue to cross-grain veneer evenly and adjust glue feed, spread and tack levels regularly to achieve desired result.

2.5 Select and assemble cross-grain and long-grain veneer in required sequence.

2.6 Position veneer and feed according to required sequence, minimising gaps and mismatched edges.

2.7 Transfer completed assemblies for pressing.

3. Redistribute material

3.1 Grade assembled ply in line with organisational procedures and industry standards.

3.2 Direct material to storage or processing operations in line with organisational procedures.

3.3 Dispose of sub-standard material and excess glue in line with environmental protection practices.

3.4 Clean work area and store unused glue in line with organisational safety procedures.

3.5 Record and report production outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

complete production jobs to bond sheets of veneer in line with individual work orders for each job that prescribe:

varying thickness of sheets of veneer to be used

varying numbers of layers of veneer to be bonded

varying quantities of assembled ply to be produced

for each of the above jobs, visually inspect assembled ply and grade according to industry and organisational standards.

Evidence of Knowledge

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for forest products factory settings:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing timber

disposing of hazardous substances

typical flow of material supply in and out of the veneer production area

typical work flow processes and techniques used to bond sheets of veneer

purpose, features and operation of ply assembly tables and glue spreading stations

appropriate parameters for rate of glue feed, spread and tack levels and effects of weather conditions on glue properties

methods used to safely store glue

key features of and applicable terminology for industry standard grades for assembled ply

organisational procedures specific to preparing veneer for ply:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out, use of personal protective equipment and handling hazardous substances

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

ply assembly tables with glue spreading stations

personal protective equipment suitable for preparing veneer for ply

a diverse range of commercial single thickness veneer of varying thicknesses

glue mix

manufacturers’:

instructions for equipment use

safety data sheets for glue

work order with specific instructions for preparing veneer for ply

template documents for recording production outcomes and equipment faults

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

organisational procedures for preparing veneer for ply.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

Foundation Skills

This section describes those core and employment skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Numeracy skills to:

identify quantities of required material within work orders and count amounts

read and adjust basic numerical machine settings to apply correct quantities of glue.

Oral communication skills to:

ask questions and actively listen to clarify contents of work orders.

Reading skills to:

interpret:

workplace health and safety and other organisational procedures

work orders

safety data sheets for glue

manufacturers’ instructions.

Writing skills to:

complete accurate basic records for production outcomes and equipment faults.

Planning and organising skills to:

efficiently and logically sequence the stages of preparation and production using work order to guide activities.
