Application
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to use a power driven saw to saw panels to size from a roll of continuous ply.
The unit applies to production workers who saw products from continuous ply in a forest and wood products factory setting and includes operator maintenance.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare for cutting | 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel. 1.2 Select appropriate personal protective and other equipment and check for operational effectiveness. 1.3 Obtain type and quantity of continuous ply to be cut from storage location. 1.4 Plan material cutting patterns and saw set-up sequences in line with work order. |
2. Cut continuous ply to size | 2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices. 2.2 Mark material and set stops in preparation for cutting. 2.3 Set-up ply on in-feed and feed systems, check and regularly adjust rate. 2.4 Follow cutting sequence and patterns to produce required quantity. 2.5 Check cuts for length or angle within set tolerance. 2.6 Dispose of incorrect cuts, off cuts and defective material in line with environmental protection practices. 2.7 Stack material safely in designated location in line with work order. |
3. Complete operator maintenance | 3.1 Follow organisational safety procedures to lock out equipment. 3.2 Check saw blades for bluntness or damage. 3.3 Remove and replace saw blades in line with manufacturer's recommendations. 3.4 Dispose of used blades in line with environmental protection practices. 3.5 Keep work area clear of dust and debris in line with organisational safety procedures. 3.6 Record and report production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel. |

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit.
produce sawn panels from continuous ply in line with individual work orders prescribing different lengths and tolerances and number of panels for each job
across the above jobs, complete cutting patterns and sequences for single straight cuts and angles requiring one cutting pass set for multiple cuts of the same size
for each of the above jobs, stack batches of sawn panels in storage location according to common length
after each of the above jobs, complete operator maintenance on the saw used.

Assessor requirements
Assessors must:
hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
