Cut panels to profile

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to cut panels to a profile, with shaping equipment, to produce moulded timber products.

The unit applies to production workers who cut panels to profile in a forest and wood products factory setting.and includes operator maintenance.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for profiling

1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Select appropriate personal protective and other equipment and check for operational effectiveness.

1.3 Obtain type and quantity of panels for profiling from storage location.

1.4 Identify profile to be cut and select cutting blades.

2. Set up profiling equipment

2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.

2.2 Follow lock-out procedures, select and attach machine guides and install cutting blades.

2.3 Set depth of cut or profile in line with required shape and to minimise waste.

2.4 Stack panels in close proximity to maximise ease of machine feeding.

2.5 Test equipment set up for correct alignment through trial run and adjust as required.

3. Cut material to profile

3.1 Feed panels into machine at feed rate prescribed by organisational requirements.

3.2 Follow, maintain and adjust cutting sequence to produce required quantity and maximise feed rate.

3.3 Check profiling process regularly and adjust to maintain desired depth and profile.

3.4 Dispose of incorrect cuts, off cuts and defective material in line with environmental protection practices.

3.5 Stack panels safely in designated location in line with work order.

4. Complete operator maintenance

4.1 Follow organisational safety procedures to lock out equipment.

4.2 Check cutting blades for bluntness or damage.

4.3 Remove and replace cutting blades in line with manufacturer's recommendations.

4.4 Keep machine clear of dust and debris in line with organisational safety procedures.

4.5 Record and report production outcomes, equipment faults and maintenance requirements to appropriate personnel.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

produce profiled panels for the following types of material in line with individual work orders that prescribe different profiles and number of panels for each job:

medium density fibreboard

laminated veneer

chipboard

fibreboard

complete profiling of product chosen from the following list:

quad

beading

mouldings

shaped beams

architraves

skirting boards

scotia

for each of the above jobs, stack batches of profiled panels in storage location according to common profile type and dimension

after each of the above jobs, complete operator maintenance on the profiling equipment used.

Evidence of Knowledge

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for forest products factory settings:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing timber and other waste

storage layout and categories for:

raw materials

stacking finished panels

typical timber panel defects and how they affect ability to produce quality profiled product:

warp

wane

cupping

holes

breakages

lifting veneer

bonding problems

common profiles and applicable terminology

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
