Move material by transfer equipment

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to set up equipment, move timber products using transfer cars and rail systems and to shut down equipment. Work is completed in a forest products factory setting

The unit applies to Production worker (Laminates, Panel and Board, Veneer)

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare to move material by transfer equipment

1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Select appropriate personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.

1.3 Inspect type and quantity of material for relocation and check for potential hazards, obstructions and spillage.

1.4 Plan moving processes in line with work order.

2. Move material

2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.

2.2 Use communication signals to notify nearby personnel of impending operation.

2.3 Select material to be moved and loading point, using schedules, orders and instructions.

2.4 Estimate material dimensions and weight to ensure load and equipment is stable.

2.5 Position and secure load using transfer car techniques in line with manufacturer's recommendations.

3. Shut down equipment

3.1 Clear material from transfer car prior to shutdown.

3.2 Coordinate shutdown with other line operators in line with organisational safety procedures.

3.3 Apply brakes and safety locks to prevent equipment from accidentally moving.

3.4 Complete routine post operational cleaning and checks in line with organisational procedures.

3.5 Clear material spillage from areas around rail system in line with environmental protection practices.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

follow organisational policies and procedures relevant to moving material by transfer equipment

moving material by transfer car to convey material to or from production areas

redistribute material on site using rail and transfer car

respond to circumstances where loads and transfer equipment may become unstable through loading oversized or overweight materials.

Evidence of Knowledge

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for operating transfer equipment:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

typical work flow processes for transferring timber and timber products to and from designated storage areas

typical workplace hazards present during transfer operations and methods of minimising risks

capacity of transfer equipment in relation to dimensions and weight

methods to correctly load transfer equipment to ensure stability of load and equipment

key features of these varying signal systems used for transfer processes:

hand signals

whistles

sirens

loud speaker announcements

two way radios

typical industry chain of command for communicating signals during transfer processes

purpose, features, operation and shut down of equipment used to transfer timber and timber products:

rail and electrically powered rail mounted transfer car systems

'follow me' trolleys

electronic-eye trolleys used in layup

organisational procedures specific to transferring timber and timber products:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out and use of personal protective equipment

communication reporting lines

recording and recording transfer processes and equipment faults.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

equipment used to transfer timber products which must include one or more of the following:

rail and electrically powered rail mounted transfer car systems

'follow me' trolleys

electronic-eye trolleys used in layup

communication equipment used to signal operation of transfer equipment

personal protective equipment suitable for transferring timber products

material for transfer including:

treated paper

wood chips

flakes

wood fibre

logs

bark

off-cuts

timber

raw board

panel products

veneer

manufacturers’ instructions for equipment use

work order with specific instructions for moving timber and timber products to and from a designated storage area

template documents for recording transfer processes and equipment faults

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

organisational procedures for transferring timber and timber products.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

Foundation Skills

This section describes those core and employment skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Numeracy skills to:

identify quantities and weight of material to be moved from work orders

complete routine calculations to determine material dimensions and weights for loading and transfer.

Oral communication skills to:

ask questions and actively listen to clarify contents of work orders

provide clear, unambiguous verbal and non-verbal communication signals.

Reading skills to:

interpret:

workplace health and safety and other organisational procedures

work orders

manufacturers’ instructions.

Writing skills to:

complete accurate basic records for process outcomes and equipment faults.

Planning and organising skills to:

efficiently and logically sequence the stages of preparation and material moving and relocating, using work order to guide activities.

Problem-solving skills to:

identify oversize, overweight and unstable items and make loading adjustments

recognise faulty equipment and resolve by reporting.

Technology skills to:
