Laminate board

Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to operate laminating presses and ancillary equipment to laminate board with treated material.

The unit applies to production operators and technicians who laminate boards in a forest and wood products factory setting and includes shutting down and cleaning equipment.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.

1. Prepare for laminating

1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Select appropriate personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.

1.3 Obtain type and quantity of board and laminating material from the production process.

1.4 Select production process in line with work order.

2. Laminate board

2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.

2.2 Complete pre start-up equipment checks to ensure operational effectiveness.

2.3 Load material and board and feed in correct sequence to suit planned assembly.

2.4 Check pressing process regularly to prevent creases, bubbles or other surface defects.

2.5 Monitor board and laid up material for position, adhesion, contamination and finish.

2.6 Transfer finished panels for further processing in line with organisational safety procedures.

2.7 Dispose of sub-standard material in line with environmental protection practices.

3. Shut down and clean equipment

3.1 Coordinate shutdown with other line operators in line with organisational safety procedures.

3.2 Strip and clean laminating press in line with organisational procedures.

3.3 Dispose of or store excess bonding agent in line with environmental protection practices.

3.4 Keep machine clear of dust and debris in line with organisational safety procedures.

3.5 Record and report production outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

laminate boards in line with individual work orders prescribing different laminating thicknesses and quantities; types of boards include:

medium density fibreboard

chipboard

plywood

fibreboard

apply different types of laminating material which include:

laminate

veneer

treated paper

after each of the above jobs, strip and clean the laminating press.

Evidence of Knowledge

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

environmental protection practices for forest products factory settings:

reducing water and energy use

cleaning plant, tools and equipment

disposing of, recycling and reusing boards

disposing of hazardous substances

typical flow of material supply in and out of the board laminating area

properties, at a basic level of understanding, of laminating materials and their uses for different types of boards:

laminate

veneer

treated paper

characteristics of board types and the effects of lamination:

medium density fibreboard

chipboard

plywood

fibreboard

typical work flow processes techniques used to laminate boards:

applying laminating material

spreading bonding agent

compressing laminating material to boards

purpose, features and operation of equipment used to laminate board:

laminating press with bond spreading stations

feeding systems

methods used to:

strip and clean laminating presses

safely store bonding agents

organisational procedures specific to laminating board:

workplace health and safety with particular emphasis on equipment lock out, use of personal protective equipment and handling hazardous substances

communication reporting lines

recording and reporting production outcomes and equipment faults.

Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

laminating press with bond spreading stations

feeding systems

personal protective equipment suitable for laminating board

commercial boards which must include one or more of the following:

medium density fibreboard

chipboard

plywood

fibreboard

laminating material which much include one or more of the following:

laminate

veneer

treated paper

bonding agent

manufacturers’ instructions for use and cleaning of equipment

work order with specific instructions for laminating board

template documents for recording production outcomes and equipment faults

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

organisational procedures for laminating boards.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

Foundation Skills

This section describes those core and employment skills that are essential to performance and are not explicit in the performance criteria.

Numeracy skills to:

identify quantities of required material within work orders and count numbers of boards

read basic numerical machine settings to set temperatures.

Oral communication skills to:

ask questions and actively listen to clarify contents of work orders.

Reading skills to:

interpret:

workplace health and safety and other organisational procedures

work orders

safety data sheets for bonding agents

manufacturers’ instructions.

Writing skills to:

complete accurate basic records for production outcomes, and equipment faults.

Planning and organising skills to:

efficiently and logically sequence the stages of preparation and production using work order to guide activities.
