Produce profile sanding shoes and wheels


Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to produce profile sanding shoes and wheels that match the product profile to be sanded.

The unit applies to production technicians and operators that produce profile sanding shoes and wheels in a forest and wood products factory setting.

1. Prepare for production.

1.1 Review and check work order with appropriate personnel.

1.2 Identify hazards and control risk in the work area according to work health and safety (WHS) requirements.

1.3 Retrieve from stock, type and quantity of blanks for shoes and wheels to be produced.

1.4 Conduct pre-start checks on equipment in line with manufacturer's recommendations and site requirements.

1.5 Plan production process in line with site procedures.

1.6 Communicate plan with others as required, to ensure safety and production requirements are met, in line with site procedures.

2. Produce shoes and wheels.

2.1 Produce template from tin or other metal plate to match profile.

2.2 Position shoe or wheel in machine and shape in line with template, stopping regularly to check shaping with template.

2.3 Label wheels or shoes to follow profile.

2.4 Install wheels or shoes into profile sander in preparation for profile sanding operations.

2.5 Reject and dispose of templates with defects in line with site procedures and environmental requirements.

2.6 Record and report production process and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.

3. Conduct operator maintenance.

3.1 Follow equipment lock-out procedures in line with site procedures.

3.2 Check and maintain condition of shoe or wheel shaping equipment.

3.3 Check shaper cutters for blunt or damaged condition and sharpen as required.

3.4 Clean tool room and clear of waste in line with site procedures.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit. If a specific volume or frequency is not stated below, then evidence must be provided that the following requirements have been performed on at least one occasion:

produce profile sanding shoes and wheels in line with safe work procedure

insert profile sanding shoes and wheels in a profile sanding machine to match given profiles

mount a wheel in a metal lathe

form the shape of a profile with the aid of a template

visually assess templates to identify defects and dispose of defective materials according to site and environmental protection requirements

lock-out equipment, visually inspect condition of components and sharpen or replace worn components

record production, quality and maintenance information using manual or computer-based data entry system (log book or computer).


Evidence of Knowledge

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

safe work procedures for producing profile sanding shoes and wheels

procedures for set-up of profile sanding equipment procedures for hazard identification and risk control relevant to own work role

procedures for recycling or re-using defective templates and disposing of waste material according to environmental protection requirements

profiling techniques

wheel and shoe production methods

established communication channels and protocols used to interact with workplace personnel

procedures for fault finding to determine product quality

procedures for use, operation and maintenance of shaping equipment and components, including equipment lock-out procedures

procedures for recording and reporting production, quality and maintenance information.

manual or computer-based recording system to record production, quality and maintenance information

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.
