Operate a laminating press for engineered wood panels

Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to operate laminating presses and ancillary equipment to laminate engineered wood panels in a manufacturing facility.

The unit applies to individuals who work as production operators and technicians. Operators generally work under broad or limited direction to complete routine activities related to their own work, and take responsibility for their work.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare for laminating engineered wood panels

1.1 Review work order, workplace health and safety requirements, environmental protection practices and emergency procedures for lamination operation and, where required, check with appropriate personnel

1.2 Identify and report hazards and use personal protective equipment according to workplace requirements and health and safety legislation to maintain safe work practices

1.3 Obtain the type and quantity of engineered wood panel and laminating material from the production process

1.4 Select production process according to work order

2. Operate a laminating press to laminate engineered wood panels

2.1 Use laminating press and ancillary equipment according to workplace health and safety procedures, manufacturer instructions and environmental protection practices

2.2 Complete pre start-up checks on the laminating press and ancillary equipment to ensure operational effectiveness

2.3 Load laminating material and engineered wood panel into the laminating press and feed in the correct sequence to suit planned assembly

2.4 Check pressing process regularly to prevent creases, bubbles or other surface defects

2.5 Monitor engineered wood panel and laid up laminating material for position, adhesion, contamination and finish

2.6 Transfer finished engineered wood panels for further processing according to workplace health and safety procedures

2.7 Dispose of sub-standard laminated material according to environmental protection practices

3. Shut down and clean equipment

3.1 Coordinate machine shutdown with other line operators according to workplace health and safety procedures

3.2 Strip and clean laminating press according to workplace procedures

3.3 Dispose of or store excess bonding agent according to environmental protection practices

3.4 Keep machine clear of dust and debris according to workplace health and safety procedures

3.5 Record and report production outcomes and laminating press and ancillary equipment faults to appropriate personnel
