Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to undertake special colour proofing. It requires the individual to evaluate artwork and produce colour proofs according to the job specifications.
It applies to individuals working in the printing and graphic arts industries who work under some supervision using practical skills and equipment to undertake special colour proofing.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
ELEMENT | PERFORMANCE CRITERIA |
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1 Evaluate artwork and separations | 1.1 Job is evaluated to identify required process 1.2 Job is evaluated to identify special colours |
2 Produce special colour proofs | 2.1 Colours are formulated according to job specifications 2.2 Film separations are exposed to appropriate medium 2.3 Colours are checked against job specifications using densitometers, spectrophotometers or visual matching to a supplied sample or Pantone Matching System (PMS) book 2.4 Colours are proofed in correct sequence according to job specifications |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
produce TWO sets of special colour proofs that match original artwork and meet client and industry requirements
find and use information relevant to the task from a variety of information sources
transfer underlying skills of proofing across the design and pre-press sectors (it is important that the substrate for reproduction is identified and the quality of the image is suitable for the printing process).
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
name systems used for matching colours
identify lighting conditions that should be used when matching colours
list effects of humidity on special colour proofing
outline factors to be considered when producing special colour for proofing
explain what determines correct colour sequence
explain how a densitometer is used for proof evaluation
explain how colour evaluation charts are used
list criteria for evaluating a colour proof
explain the manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task and briefly outline the relevant information.
Assessment Conditions
Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the Pre-Press field of work and include access to special purpose tools, equipment and industry software packages.
Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
Foundation Skills
This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
Skill | Performance Criteria | Description |
Reading | 2.1, 2.3, 2.4 | Recognises and interprets text to establish job requirements from information contained within relevant procedures and specifications |
Numeracy | 2.3 | Interprets and analyses a range of mathematical information used in familiar and routine tasks |
Get the work done | 1.1, 1.2, 2.1-2.4 | Takes responsibility for planning and organising own workload, identifying ways of sequencing and combining elements for greater efficiency Responds to predictable problems and implements standard or logical solutions related to role in immediate work environment Understands purposes, specific functions and key features of common digital systems and tools and operates them effectively to complete tasks |
