Produce gravure cylinders electronically

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge needed to undertake electronic processes and procedures used to make gravure cylinders. It requires the individual to prepare and electronically engrave a blank cylinder to be used for gravure printing according to job specifications.

It applies to individuals working in the printing and graphic arts industries who work under some supervision using practical skills and equipment to produce gravure cylinders electronically.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1 Select cylinder

1.1 Job specifications are interpreted to select an appropriate cylinder and/or core

1.2 Base cylinder is selected according to job specifications

2 Pre-plan for engraving

2.1 Opels are analysed against job specifications and technical requirements of the equipment

2.2 Opels are masked manually for any uneven start positioning

3 Engrave cylinder electronically

3.1 A clean work environment is maintained to ensure quality of output

3.2 Equipment is maintained according to manufacturer’s specifications

3.3 Cylinder is engraved according to job specifications and enterprise procedures

4 Adjust finished cylinder

4.1 Additions and deletions are made to cylinder according to job specifications and enterprise procedures

4.2 Required changes are pre-planned

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

prepare, set up and use an electronic engraving system to produce BOTH stylus and laser gravure cylinders, according to job specifications, and ensuring the cylinder is correctly etched to ensure quality reproduction, and meets print requirements

find and use information relevant to the task from a variety of information sources

transfer underlying skills of cylinder making across the pre-press sector (it is important the substrate for reproduction is identified and the quality of the cylinder is suitable for the identified printing processes).

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline work health and safety (WHS) concerns when engraving cylinders

state production parameters that should exist on the job ticket

calculate a change in screen angle

identify screen line ratio for fine rulings

describe specific features of the laser engraving process

explain how the cutting stylus can affect print quality

outline characteristics of the diamond stylus used for colour work

explain techniques of deleting errors on the finished cylinder

identify manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task, where they are kept, and information included in them.

Assessment Conditions

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the Pre-Press field of work and include access to special purpose tools, equipment and industry software packages.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Foundation Skills

This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
