Reclaim screen automatically

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to safely reclaim screens using automatic cleaning equipment.

It applies to individuals working under direct supervision and performing mainly routine tasks such as monitoring machinery operations and carrying out routine maintenance.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1 Select and prepare chemicals

1.1 Ink and stencil type are correctly identified and screen is assessed for suitability to be reclaimed

1.2 Screen reclamation chemicals are selected and prepared according to manufacturer or supplier specifications

1.3 Appropriate safety gear is selected and worn according to manufacturer or supplier specifications and work health and safety (WHS) requirements

2 Maintain and adjust equipment

2.1 Automatic cleaning equipment is inspected and routine user maintenance is carried out according to manufacturer or supplier specifications and enterprise procedures

2.2 Automatic cleaning equipment is adjusted to suit ink system, mesh type and frame size

3 Wash screen

3.1 Screens are washed using pressure gun or automatic machine in suitably ventilated area with required extraction system

3.2 Stains and hazes are removed using appropriate chemicals according to manufacturer or supplier specifications and WHS requirements

3.3 Screens are checked for damage and any defects are reported and/or rectified according to enterprise procedures

4 Store screen

4.1 Screens are correctly identified and labelled

4.2 Screens are stored in clean, dry environment according to manufacturer or supplier specifications

5 Carry out routine maintenance

5.1 Cleaning equipment is lubricated, cleaned and adjusted according to manufacturer or supplier specifications

5.2 Faults are identified, reported and/or rectified according to manufacturer or supplier specifications

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

use automatic cleaning equipment to reclaim THREE screens, with various grades of meshes and ink types, according to manufacturer guidelines and enterprise procedures, including:

selecting and using chemicals and associated safety gear

checking and adjusting automatic cleaning equipment prior to use

washing and checking screens for defects

storing screens

maintain automatic cleaning equipment, including identifying faults and taking action according to manufacturer guidelines.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency

Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

identify the types of stencil that are used

explain the significance of mesh counts

explain the handling technique used for frames with various mesh counts

describe the personal protective equipment items used for screen reclamation

identify the health and safety concerns associated with chemical handling

explain why various ink types are treated differently when reclaiming

determine what pollution controls are in operation with regards to environmental issues

explain where to find information on the application of each chemical

list the ventilation and extraction systems that should be in operation

outline the maintenance procedures that are necessary for equipment or machinery used

describe the properties of different reclamation chemicals

describe how chemicals are applied for stencil removal

list the chemicals that are used to remove stains or haze

explain the method used to identify the reclamation status of screens

outline the key points to consider when storing reclaimed screens

identify machine manuals, safety and other documentation relevant to this task and for each one:

state its location

explain what type of information is included.

Assessment Conditions

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the screen printing field of work and include access to:

chemicals and lubricants

appropriate safety gear

automatic cleaning equipment

screens.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
