Dispose of waste


Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to dispose of waste according to enterprise procedures and government regulations.

It applies to individuals who perform a range of defined tasks relating to the printing and graphic arts industry, and who may also provide some leadership and guidance to others with some limited responsibility for the output of others.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare waste

1.1 Waste is stored according to work health and safety (WHS) and Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) requirements

1.2 Waste treatment system is monitored to ensure correct operation and changes to procedures are recommended if required

1.3 Waste is treated, if necessary, to ensure compliance with workplace and EPA standards

2. Dispose of waste

2.1 Appropriate disposal is arranged with regard to waste quality, quantity and EPA and government regulations

2.2 Waste is disposed of in an appropriate way to ensure compliance with workplace and EPA standards

2.3 Any subcontractors are checked to ensure they comply with EPA and government regulations

2.4 Wastage rates are documented or collated for further review

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

treat and dispose of TWO lots of waste according to enterprise and statutory requirements and regulations.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.


Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain consequences of a company having excess waste

summarise how to follow segregating and packaging requirements for correct disposal

outline appropriate handling methods

outline consequences of incorrectly handling waste

identify appropriate storage method

demonstrate how to check results obtained against enterprise and statutory details

list details recorded when recording results of liquid waste treatment

explain why equipment must be kept clean and maintained

explain where to find relevant manuals, safety and other documentation and outline the information included in each source

identify work health and safety (WHS) concerns related to operating, cleaning and maintaining waste testing equipment

outline the Environmental Protection Authority requirements regarding storage and disposal of waste

describe WHS regulations on the handling of waste


Assessment Conditions

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the Support field of work and include access to waste and waste disposal equipment.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
