Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify, evaluate and apply industry specific technologies to ensure that the quality of the entire business process is maintained to the highest possible level.
It applies to individuals who support information and communications technology (ICT) activities in the workplace across a wide range of ICT areas, including technical support, network administration, programming, testing, web technologies, software applications and digital media technologies.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
ELEMENT | PERFORMANCE CRITERIA |
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1. Prepare to identify and evaluate industry specific technologies | 1.1 Identify technologies specific to an industry sector 1.2 Acquire industry-specific technologies 1.3 Identify, classify and use industry specific technologies for the benefit of the organisation |
2. Apply industry specific technology to assist in solving organisational problems | 2.1 Conduct testing of industry specific technologies 2.2 Apply features and functions of industry specific technologies to provide a suitable solution to an identified problem 2.3 Demonstrate depth of knowledge of enabling technologies to an accepted industry standard 2.4 Access and use sources of information relating to the industry specific technologies |
3. Review and evaluate industry-specific technology performance | 3.1 Review and evaluate industry specific technologies for performance, usability and benefit to the organisation 3.2 Determine environmental considerations involved with using the technologies 3.3 Seek feedback from users where appropriate |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
identify new and emerging industry specific technologies
apply and evaluate features and functions of identified industry specific technologies to an industry standard.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
discuss current industry specific technology trends and directions, and the major standards
outline vendor product directions
describe the general features, capabilities and application of current industry hardware and software products
discuss information gathering techniques.
Assessment Conditions
Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the general information and communications technology (ICT) industry, and include access to:
a site where industry specific technologies may be used
industry specific technologies currently used in industry
documents detailing workplace health and safety (WHS) standards, environmental guidelines and organisational requirements.
Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
Foundation Skills
This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
Skill | Performance Criteria | Description |
Learning | 1.1-1.3, 2.3, 2.4 | Investigates, evaluates and applies information from a range of complex and technical texts to expand own knowledge and identify industry specific technologies that will benefit the organisation |
Reading | 1.1, 1.3, 2.1, 2.4, 3.2, 3.3 | Identifies and interprets technical online and hard copy documentation containing complex terminology and diagrams to identify industry specific technologies that will benefit the organisation, and to determine environmental considerations |
Oral Communication | 1.1-1.3, 2.4, 3.1-3.3 | Elicits information and feedback by using effective listening and questioning techniques to identify and evaluate industry specific technologies Uses clear, easy-to-understand language and translates industry specific terminology into plain English when talking to users and when necessary |
Navigate the world of work | 2.4, 3.2 | Recognises and responds to both explicit and implicit protocols within familiar work contexts and appreciates the importance of identifying and responding to protocols in new situations May recognise problems that have the potential to become legal issues and takes steps to address them before they escalate |
Get the work done | 1.1-1.3, 2.1- 2.4, 3.1 | Understands key principles and concepts underpinning the design and operation of digital systems and tools, and applies these when troubleshooting existing technology and when seeking to understand the potential of new technology Develops plans to manage relatively complex non-routine tasks with an awareness of how they may contribute to longer term operational and strategic goals |
