Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to design and implement a network authentication model that allows users to log in using the same user credentials between multiple operating system platforms to provide a secure method of sharing files on the same network.
It applies to individuals employed in network or systems engineering roles where they are required to support multiple operating systems in a complex computing environment of medium-to-large organisations.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
produce design documents to integrate multiple server operating systems for authentication, file sharing and security
install and configure the integrated solution according to the produced design
monitor and test the solution
troubleshoot integration problems.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

summarise compatibility issues and resolution procedures
outline current network operating systems (NOS)
describe current server applications, compatibility issues and resolution procedures
list documentation required for networks
outline error and event logging and reporting
summarise file and print management

outline high availability options for servers
summarise network file systems and shares
outline network service configuration and security
summarise operating system help and support utilities
list and describe performance monitoring tools and tuning options
describe the process of managing a project, including:
process or task management
task scheduling utilities
explain troubleshooting tools and techniques, including network diagnostic utilities
describe user authentication and directory services.
Assessment Conditions
Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the network industry, and include access to:
a site where server installation may be conducted
relevant server specifications such as:
multiple operating system platforms
cabling
networked (LAN) computers
server diagnostic software
switching equipment
client requirements
workstations
relevant regulatory documentation that affects installation activities.
Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
