Install an enterprise virtual computing environment

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and implement virtualisation technologies, with the goal of providing a more sustainable information and communications technology (ICT) environment.

It applies to individuals working as senior networking staff who are responsible for the sustainability of an organisation by using virtualisation technologies.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Analyse client needs

1.1 Assess client requirements

1.2 Assess existing client or server systems that may be suitable to be virtualised

2. Analyse virtualisation host software

2.1 Assess and compare suitable virtualisation host software according to organisational requirements

2.2 Document recommendations and provide to appropriate person

3. Evaluate system requirements

3.1 Obtain and document technical specifications and system requirements from virtualisation software vendors

3.2 Compare the system requirements needed to implement virtualisation according to organisational requirements

3.3 Document recommendations and provide to appropriate person

4. Install virtualisation host software

4.1 Install virtualisation host platform according to organisational requirements

4.2 Validate functionality of the virtualisation host platform according to organisational requirements

Evidence of Performance

Evidence of the ability to:

analyse client needs for a virtual computing environment

evaluate, recommend and document the system requirements

install and validate an enterprise virtual computing environment.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Evidence of Knowledge

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

identify and describe current government and industry policies and guidelines related to developing sustainable information and communications technology (ICT) environments

describe the current technologies and processes designed to produce a sustainable ICT environment

outline the structure, function and business organisation of client

outline available tools and software applications required to manage virtual machines

explain the configuration of software applications required to manage virtual machines

explain the configuration required to integrate virtual machines into existing network design.

Assessment Conditions

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the networking industry, and include access to:

a site or prototype where virtual machine environments may be implemented

network technical requirements

software.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Foundation Skills

This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.

Skill

Performance Criteria

Description

Reading

1.1, 2.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2

Recognises and interprets technical and organisational documentation to determine and confirm job requirements

Writing

2.2, 3.1, 3.3

Develops a range of workplace documentation for a specific audience, using clear and detailed language to convey explicit information, requirements and recommendations

Oral Communication

1.1, 3.1

Uses listening and questioning skills to confirm understanding for requirements

Establishes and maintains complex and effective spoken communication in a broad range of contexts

Navigate the world of work

2.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2

Recognises and responds to both explicit and implicit protocols within familiar work contexts and appreciates the importance of identifying and responding to protocols in new situations

Interact with others

2.2, 3.3

Actively identifies the requirements of important communication exchanges, selecting appropriate channels, format, tone and content to suit purpose and audience

Get the work done

1.2, 2.1, 3.1, 3.2, 4.2

Demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of principles, concepts, language and practices associated with the digital world

May operate from a broad conceptual plan, developing the operational detail in stages, regularly reviewing priorities and performance during implementation, and identifying and addressing issues

Actively identifies systems, devices and applications with potential to meet current and/or future needs

Uses nuanced understanding of context to recognise anomalies in a virtualised machine environment and subtle deviations to normal expectations, focussing attention and remedying problems promptly
