Application
This unit supports the attainment of skills and knowledge required for competent workplace performance in councils of all sizes. Knowledge of the legislation and regulations within which councils must operate is essential. The unique nature of councils, as a tier of government directed by elected members and reflecting the needs of local communities, must be appropriately reflected.

Monitor and care for animals | 2.1 Behavioural and general characteristics of animals are recognised and a suitable response is employed before and during handling. 2.2 Health and condition of animals are assessed upon capture and during impoundment with the necessary response taken in accordance with council policies and procedures. 2.3 Safe work practices, procedures and environmental conditions are observed when handling, monitoring and caring for animals. |
3. Assist in the operation and maintenance of pound facilities | 3.1 Issues of concern with animal housing are identified and reported and animals are rehoused as necessary. 3.2 Cleaning and waste disposal duties are carried out in accordance with pound procedures. 3.3 Registers and records are updated in accordance with pound procedures. |

Evidence Required
Overview of assessment requirements | A person who demonstrates competency in this unit will be able to perform the outcomes described in the Elements to the required performance level detailed in the Performance Criteria. The knowledge and skill requirements described in the Range Statement must also be demonstrated. For example, knowledge of the legislative framework and safe work practices that underpin the performance of the unit are also required to be demonstrated. |
Critical aspects of evidence to be considered | Impounding techniques used are verified as appropriate to animal species and the condition of the animal. Assessment of animal health and condition is in accordance with council policies and procedures. Disposal of animals, where necessary, is verified and in line with council policies and procedures. Traffic control is in accordance with relevant licensing requirements and generally under workplace supervision. Use of firearms is in accordance with relevant licensing requirements and generally under workplace supervision. |
