NWPSOU021
Inspect and maintain basic dams and water storages

Application

This unit describes the skills required to undertake inspection of basic dams and water storages and to conduct routine maintenance according to organisational maintenance plans and manufacturer specifications.

This unit applies to those working as field staff with specific responsibility for undertaking basic surveillance and routine maintenance on dams and storages, including urban reservoirs and large wastewater lagoons.

The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.

Those undertaking this unit would work under supervision, while performing routine tasks in a limited range of familiar contexts.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

ELEMENTS

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions section.

1. Undertake inspection

1.1 Select, fit and use safety equipment, including personal protective equipment.

1.2 Carry out routine inspections of dams and storages.

1.3 Read seepage flow device gauge and use table to translate, and record information.

1.4 Identify assets and structural components requiring routine maintenance or repairs.

2. Undertake maintenance of dam or storage equipment and structures

2.1 Select and check equipment and materials required for maintenance and repair tasks.

2.2 Carry out routine maintenance.

2.3 Operate basic flow control, measuring, surveillance and ancillary devices as part of routine checks.

3. Report on dam or storage inspection and maintenance

3.1 Communicate abnormal observations and potentially serious maintenance issues with line management.

3.2 Complete dam inspection reports and routine maintenance reports and forward to relevant personnel.

Evidence of Performance

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the candidate must demonstrate evidence of performance of the following on at least one occasion.

undertaking visual inspections

exercising valves

performing work-related calculations

measuring and recording seepage flow

operating controls and ancillary equipment according to standard operating procedures

following policies, procedures and standards

using safety and personal protective equipment

adjusting mechanical and electrical systems

identifying control system faults

conducting routine inspections of dams and storages according to organisational requirements

taking readings from specified devices

identifying and reporting repair and maintenance requirements

conducting routine basic maintenance according to organisational maintenance plans

completing inspection and maintenance reports

Evidence of Knowledge

Evidence required to demonstrate competence must satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria. If not otherwise specified the depth of knowledge demonstrated must be appropriate to the job context of the candidate.

visual and electronic inspection procedures

equipment operation, capacity and limitations

system layout

risk factors and potential hazards of surface water systems

routine maintenance procedures

communication and reporting systems

basic dam design

risks to dams

Assessment Conditions

Competency should be assessed in an actual workplace or in a simulated environment, with access to equipment and infrastructure appropriate to the outcome. Competency should be demonstrated over time to ensure the candidate is assessed across a variety of situations.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.

Foundation Skills

The foundation skills demands of this unit have been mapped for alignment with the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF). The following tables outline the performance levels indicated for successful attainment of the unit.

Further information on ACSF and the foundation skills underpinning this unit can be found in the Foundation Skills Guide on the GSA website.
