Apply sustainable work practices/policies


Application

This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to identify and apply sustainable work practices and policies to reduce negative environmental impacts of work practices, in the pulp and paper industry. These policies and practices should be applied without compromising work health and safety (WHS) or legal requirements, and with due regard for other productivity and quality related operational requirements.

The unit applies to production support operators who work in a pulp or paper manufacturing facility, enabling them to meet safety, quality and productivity requirements.

No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Identify current resource use

1.1. Identify and clarify workplaceenvironmental and resource efficiencyissues with appropriate personnel

1.2. Follow productivity requirementsand identify resources used in job role.

1.3. Measure and document current usage of resources using appropriate techniques.

2. Comply with relevant regulations

2.1. Identify and follow work health and safety (WHS) requirements, environmental regulations and workplace sustainability requirements.

2.2. Report breaches or potential breaches of regulations and workplace requirements to appropriate personnel, according to workplace procedures.

3. Seek opportunities to improve efficiency

3.1. Follow workplace sustainability plans to improve environmental practices and resource efficiency.

3.2. Make suggestions for improvements to workplace practices in own work area.

Evidence of Performance

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy all of the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, and must be able to provide evidence that they can:

follow in own work role, workplace sustainability policy and procedures, at least twice in line with required enterprise intervals, by:

identifying policy and regulations related to work health and safety (WHS) or legal requirements and job tasks

applying productivity and quality related workplace guidelines

improving workplace environmental performance by promoting efficient production and consumption of natural resources by minimising waste and using water and energy efficiently

preventing and minimising environmental and other risks and maximising opportunities through usage of alternative forms of energy and renewable resources, where appropriate

engaging and communicating in the workplace to ensure clarification of sustainability approaches in work requirements.


Evidence of Knowledge

A person competent in this unit must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

key requirements outlined in workplace documentation and procedures relevant to sustainability, including WHS, environmental sustainability practices, standard operating procedures (SOP), isolation procedures, risks and hazard identification and housekeeping

workplace practices, relevant to own job role, that aid in the achievement of workplace sustainability

workplace sustainability best practice approaches, relevant to the organisation

environmental and resource hazards and risks and inefficiencies associated within own work area

relevant environmental and resource efficiency systems and procedures, for own work area

principles, practices and available tools and techniques of sustainability management relevant to the pulp and paper industry

key aspects of the quality assurance systems relevant to own organisation

implications of upstream and downstream impacts of the application of sustainable work practices.


Assessment Conditions

The following resources must be made available:

access to environmental monitoring documentation and records of resource usage (water, energy, waste streams) in a pulp or paper manufacturing facility

personal protective equipment relevant to applying sustainable work practices

template documents for recording system information and processes to document sustainable workplace practices

sample workplace documentation relevant to sustainability

relevant personnel for the purposes of communicating information

organisational workplace health and safety and standard operating procedures relevant to the job role.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or in a productive environment that accurately reflects performance in a workplace.

Assessor requirements

Assessors must:

hold the appropriate assessor competency standards as outlined in regulations; and

be able to demonstrate vocational competencies at least to the level being assessed; and

be able to demonstrate how they are continuing to develop their VET knowledge and skills as well as maintaining their industry currency and assessor competence.

investigate and analyse resource use in the workplace.

Writing skills to:

communicate ideas and information, using an appropriate structure and layout.

discuss and clarify organisational requirements with a colleague or supervisor.

Reading skills to:

read and evaluate formal documents including environmental policy and procedures.
