Provide vehicle technical advice

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to provide vehicle technical advice in response to enquiries from police, other agencies and the general public or for court proceedings or coronial enquiries.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements are applicable to this unit.

Application

This unit applies to individuals in road transport regulatory roles who have the technical expertise to interpret detailed vehicle inspection data and form and provide an opinion based on the analysis of that data. Opinions and advice may be sought by and provided to the police, other agencies, coroners or the courts

1 Obtain and interpret detailed inspection data

1.1 Inspection data and other relevant information is gathered, recorded and confirmed as valid and authentic.

1.2 Information is analysed and interpreted to assist in the identification of issue/s.

1.3 Information is handled in accordance withlegal and ethical requirements.

2 Undertake technical research

2.1 Standards and specifications related to the issues are identified and accessed.

2.2 Research is undertaken on all the information gathered during detailed vehicle inspections.

2.3 Advice is sought to clarify any unclear findings in accordance with organisational policy and procedures.

2.4 Research findings are reported and presented in language, style and format to suit the intended audience.

2.5 Supporting information and explanations are provided as required by the requesting party.

3 Form and provide opinions

3.1 Options related to the provision of advice are identified and evaluated.

3.2 An opinion is formed that is logical, reasoned and defensible, and documented in accordance with legislation, policy and procedures.

3.3 When required, opinions are offered on actions to be taken in response.

3.4 A comprehensive report supporting opinions reached, is provided to meet requesting agency requirements.

providing vehicle technical advice relating to three actual or simulated situations on separate occasions or for three different vehicle situations/contexts.

forming opinions that are supported with detailed inspection data and research findings

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure access to a real or simulated workplace environment that closely resembles normal work practice and replicates the range of conditions likely to be encountered while providing vehicle technical advice, including coping with difficulties, irregularities and breakdowns in routine.

case studies and workplace scenarios to capture the range of requirements for situations likely to be encountered
