Promote public safety objectives by liaison between the police service and Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities

This unit covers the identification of significant information and assistance in the implementation of departmental strategies for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community in accordance with organisational policy and guidelines.

Application

The application of this unit in the workplace - the environments, complexities and situations involved - will be written during Phase II of the Review of the PUA00 Public Safety Training Package.

This text will be useful for the purposes of job descriptions, recruitment advice or job analysis; where possible, it will not be too job specific to allow other industries to import it into other Training Packages, where feasible.

1. Identify and communicate public safety concerns of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community

1.1 Community cultural, religious or recreational activities are attended to build networks and relationships

1.2 Community meetings are attended and issues raised recorded

1.3 Information collected is collated and reported to relevant officers as appropriate

2. Consult with members and organisations of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community to identify community concerns and assist in the negotiation of strategies

2.1 Persons and organisations of importance in the community are identified

2.2 Problems in police relations with an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community are identified, discussed and reported as appropriate

2.3 Crime and social disorder concerns of the community are identified and reported to supervisors

2.4 Community suggestions are elicited and reported to relevant officers

2.5 Police service strategies are explained and feedback reported to supervisors

3. Advise senior police on cultural factors affecting the success of service strategies in relation to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities

3.1 Relevant cultural protocols are explained

3.2 Appropriate communications channels are identified

3.3 Community decision-making practices are explained and the roles of key groups and organisations identified

3.4 Strategies are suggested to achieve service objectives whilst respecting cultural differences
