This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to plan and undertake a field trip in Metalliferous mining.
This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles. Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.
Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to undertake field trip | 1.1. Access, interpret and apply field trip documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant 1.2. Arrange access to field site with relevant stakeholders 1.3. Adhere to restrictions, agreements and customs when accessing field site 1.4. Identify available and efficient communication systems 1.5. Use maps, photos, satellite images and existing exploration data to plan access, traverses and camp site(s) 1.6. Plan supplies to support the location, duration and size of the field trip 1.7. Obtain supplies according to inventory and securely stow for field trip 1.8. Establish duty rosters for field trip activities in consultation with other team members |
2. Establish and maintain field camp | 2.1. Set up appropriate size field camp for number of team members in accordance with safety and environmental procedures 2.2. Monitor and participate in catering, hygiene and security activities as allocated 2.3. Obtain and monitor use of supplies as necessary to maintain health and safety 2.4. Set up and operate gas and electrical appliances and generators safely |
3. Work as part of a team in remote locations | 3.1. Contribute effectively to the achievement of shared goals and objectives 3.2. Evidence of Performance
Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:
locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures
implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of planning and undertaking field trips including:
erecting shelters
collecting food and water
lighting fires
navigating with maps and stars
using portable gas and electricity equipment
identifying and using communications systems
works effectively with others to complete the planning and undertaking of field trips that meets all of the required outcomes including:
communicating clear and concise information
co-operating with co-workers to achieve safe and harmonious working environment
demonstrates completion of planing and undertaking field trips that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:
planning accesses, traverses and camp site locations
planning, obtaining and stowing supplies
establishing the camp to accommodate team
participating in catering, hygiene and security activities
monitoring use of supplies against trip plan
Evidence of Knowledge
The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of planning and undertaking a field trip through:
following organisation and site requirements and procedures for planning and undertaking field trips
identifying and applying planning and scheduling systems
identifying and applying systems for site access approvals
complying with relevant regulations, licenses and permits, including land-use permits
accessing historical mining data of field site
preparing trip plan and logistics
preparing supply sources, costs and availability
applying basic vehicle maintenance techniques
using vehicle for survival
Assessment Conditions
An assessor of this unit must satisfy the requirements of the NVR/AQTF or their successors; and Industry regulations for certification and licensing; and,
this unit must be assessed in the context of this sector’s work environment; and,
this unit must be assessed in compliance with relevant legislation/regulation and using policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals directly related to the industry sector for which it is being assessed; and,
assessment may be conducted in conjunction with the assessment of other Units of Competency; and,
assessment must confirm consistent performance can be applied in a range of relevant workplace circumstances; and,
assessors must demonstrate the performance evidence, and knowledge evidence as outlined in this Unit of Competency, and through the minimum years of current* work experience specified below in an Industry sector relevant to the outcomes of the unit; or,
where the assessor does not meet experience requirements a co-assessment or partnership arrangement must exist between the qualified assessor and an Industry subject matter expert. The Industry subject matter expert should hold the unit being assessed (or an equivalent unit) and/or demonstrate equivalence of skills and knowledge at the unit level. An Industry technical expert must also demonstrate skills and knowledge from the minimum years of current work experience specified below in the Industry sector, including time spent in roles related to the unit being assessed; and,
assessor and Industry subject matter expert requirements differ depending on the Australian Qualifications Framework Level (AQF) of the qualification being assessed and/or Industry Sector as follows:

*Assessors can demonstrate current work experience through employment within Industry in a role relevant to the outcomes of the Unit; or, for external assessors this can be demonstrated through exposure to Industry by conducting frequent site assessments across various locations.
